awhile ago I posted regarding getting 3 guitars .2 dreads and a 00
built by an older luthier who worked in the Martin factory ..they were
built w/ straight grain Brazilian from the 60s for about 2500
each...health problems caused long delays and to be frank his skills
were eroded ,by the illness during the finishing process..to the
extent that I had to have them refinished by another luthier...this
added a couple of grand to the final total cost..fortunately the
guitars when finished were the best guitars Ive ever played .the
proverbial dream guitars..and Ive been playing for 50 years..It was a
hassle to be sure but I was amazed by the old woods used and how they
impacted sound ..no break-in needed...heavenly sound.and
playability.from the get go.so all in all. get some old woods when you
get your next guitar built and ask your luthier to take a physical
before contracting the job..Originally I planned to sell some of these
guitars...not a chance now that Ive heard them. These guitars aren't
going anywhere..the maker is still alive and winding down his business
as he s facing reality and Im a poorer but happy player

That's too bad about the luthier. I'm glad this worked out in the end.

Patience does pay off, sometimes. Sounds like you got some excellent
instruments there. Good on ya.

What proportion of the cost is in the finishing? That, for me, would be
by far the most daunting aspect of building a guitar.

Bell, the price is still very good even with the refinish, if the
instruments are top quality.

These days, Brazilian Rosewood is worth it's weight in gold. A set of back
and sides for one guitar costs anywhere from $2k to $10k (for just the wood)
depending on the quality and provinance - if you can find it. So adding
$500 to the cost of finishing, while really annoying, is a small part of the
cost of one of these guitars.
