I'm thinking of buying a Gibson Artist acoustic guitar. Has anyone out there
bought one or played it. How does it compare with Martins / Taylors in build
quality? - I don't really have that much to compare it to here.

Thanks ANdy

Hey Wade,
A guy might sell me his 6 month old Blues King Electro EC-30 for $1K! I saw it
listed for $2300. According to the brochure, it has 24.5" scale (my fave) ebony
fret board, etc. Full toot ax. Any experience or comments?
Peace,
Steve

Steve,

I played one of these a while back and didn't like it at all. It sounded
lifeless and dull. I didn't try it plugged in as guitars for me have to first
have a decent acoustic sound. It looked nice though.

I had a similar reaction to this guitar as I have with the few reissue Nick
Lucas guitars I have played. I have played quite a few of the old, vintage
Nick Lucas guitars and liked them all, but the reissue ones have all sounded
like laminated guitars in comparison.

Why not just get an old L-OO.

Steve asked about the Gibson Blues King, and Dick replied:

My experiences with the Blues King were similar to Dick's, but not with the
Nick Lucas reissues. I played a couple of those and was very impressed with
both.

Thanx Dick & Wade,
I saw this guitar from the back onstage locally, beautiful natural flamed maple
s/b. I thought it must be a Guild X-700 but the headstock shape was Gibson.
Turns out its the EC-30. The guy also has a Taylor which he prefers. I know the
bass player so got the tip about the Gibson may be for sale soon.
I haven't played it yet or seen it close up. I was more interested in it for playing
out as it has full zoot onboard electron wranglers, etc. A friend has an L-00 I
really like. This thing is way different. Porter Wagoner end of the spectrum.
Thanx for the reviews. Yeah, sometimes 24.5" scale can be thuddy. The L-00 has
the longer, but I was thinking about ES-175, J-45, Etc., playability. Once they're
plugged in, the piezo colors it quite a bit.
Tks,
Steve

Steve and Dick,

I have to disagree with Dick on this one. The EC-30 is an acoustic meant
to be plugged in, so you really can't judge it until you do. It's like a
hybrid acoustic crossed with a jazz guitar. Consequently, it doesn't
have the ringing overtones of a good standard acoustic, but nevertheless,
it has a very clean and unique sounding when plugged in. The action and
feel remind me of an electric, but you know you're holding a great
acoustic. $1,000 is a good price. I've seen them new for $1,500 without
case. I feel it's really a unique instrument and have toyed with
getting one because it would nicely complement my other guitars.
