I've been helping a friend shop for a nice guitar. Today we
found out that what fits her best is an 0 size with a twelve fret
neck. These seem to be hard to find, and I was wondering if
anyone knew who built something this size. Our budget is around
three grand.
TIA
He's been making a lot of 00 size lately and may be willing to make an 0
size.
That's not a common size these days.

Here's one that you might find in your price range:

Played one of those today. That's how we decided upon the size.
Thank you.

Many dealers, eg Elderly instruments will give a 40% discount on Martins,
which they aren't allowed to advertise, if you phone them. That would put it
at less than $3k.
I had an original of these, a 1925 0-21. Fabulous sound, but I didn't like
the 1 7/8" neck width.

Unless I'm mistaken, all Larrivee parlors are 0- 12 fret. You have a
lot to choose from including woods, trim level and even finishes,
readily available and without breaking the bank.

That was my thinking, too, Tony. As they say in New York, "Nobody pays
retail!" In fact, not only is MSRP never the actual price, but the
existence of MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) suggests that in actual
negotiations, some vendors will discount even more.
As use say the very mention of MAP suggests that they will go better. Last
time I looked at the Elderly catalog, they put their phone number right
underneath every MAP - nod nod, wink wink. I wonder what would happen if you
ordered at the MAP? Would they still bill you for the bigger discount?
Tony D
I'm sure some businesses would, but I kind of think that Elderly would
give you the discount. That's my take on Stan Werbin.
It is.

And there is a dealer in Portland. Thank you!

If you are talking a Martin 0-size, the Larrivee Parlors are not quite the
same. A major difference being the 24" scale of the Larrivee, unless I am
mistaken, the Martins were 24.9". And, the lower bout sizes and body depths
are different. Not by a lot but different all the same. The orig. Larrivee
Parlors were called 0-01's by Larrivee, though.
Disclaimer, I don't have the actual Martin #'s in front of me.
Ed
That's ok. One of these days, she's going to have something in
her lap, and she's going to ask me to hold it while she gets out
her checkbook. So far it looks like it will be something in koa
and western red cedar. We're narrowing the search.
This is fun.

Buying guitars always is.
Even when it's for someone else.

Ain't that the truth?
FWIW, I'd fully recommend trying some Larrivee Parlors. If you find the
right one, they can be really spectacular guitars, especially at the price.
There are, however no cedar toppped ones.

We'll do that.

We might need to get something built. Not That There's Anything
Wrong With That.

Well, the auction is over, I have zero woodworking skills, and
she wants a brighter sound. Other than that, it's perfect.
Back in the 70s, my brother had a 1937 0-17 that he left with me for
while. During that time, I had a little party and one of the gals I
worked with brought a guy she'd met on the plane from Memphis (I was in
Nashville). Weird guy, all in green, suit, shirt, tie, belt, shoes and
socks. When she introduced him, I dropped my teeth, Larry Coryell. I
let him get a couple of burgers down before I seduced him (Ya know, I've
got a 1937 Martin in there?)
When it was time for him to be going onstage at the Exit/In, he was
still sitting in my livingroom, jamming with a gal from India on some ragas.
I'd second that. I have a koa/sitka Larrivee Parlour which is a
belter. Cost $700 - ish. Don't even think about the cheap ones though
- the sound breaks up if you more than stroke the things.
Best parlour I ever heard was made by Alan Marshall about 10 years ago
- very sturdy, but then it was Braz/sitka so you got everything from
it. A growly parlour? You bet!
Pete
You might try a Washburn Parlor, which will give you a closer feel on the
neck than the Larrivee's.
Steve,
You might look into Evergreen Mountain Instruments:

I have a friend who has owned one for many years and loves it. He has also
built several of his own instruments and swears by Jerry Nolte's knowledge
as a guiding light.
The Martin 0 size is 13-1/2 Inches. EMI has models 1/2 larger and a 1/2 "
smaller, and he's in your price range.

Yeah! And he's even pretty local! Same state, anyway.
