Are going away? The number of posts seems to
dwindle daily. Nothing on here since 11pm last

I haven't reached my prime yet, but I hear that Tom in Texas is faltering

Is Tom trying for the young JFK look? And, if so, does that indicate
decline? As a non-USA citizen, I'm never sure about these things.

Traffic has been a *bit* light, but there have been quite a few
messages since last night. Unless you mean "last night" Australian
time, in which case, once again, my mind fails me.

In general posts are getting fewer, for which I imagine Facebook is
responsible, but I haven't noticed any particular short term problem.

Again, the ukmg exodus is the direct result of people moving to Facebook.

Best guitar I heard yesterday: Andrew Hardin, on a board mix of a gig a

Most fun I had playing music yesterday: trying to figure out with Alec

An extra fun thing about that is that we had almost zero preparation
ahead of time, and it was the girl's first time to just realx and go
with the loose flow of it all. On that gig she became a genuine
professional musician in the git 'er done sense.

When I told here he would be willing to join us, and Richard, too, but
we wouldn't have practice ahead of it I thought she'd balk. Nope, not at
all.

I refuse to even look at Facebook. My local car club is in the process
of switching over to FB from a web site & forum, and I may actually
end up leaving the club if I can no longer communicate with the other
members.

There are no "distant people" I wish to remain in contact with (that I
know of) and I doubt I'd "find" them or they me if I did put up a
profile on FB. I have a handful of music friends, a roomful of
paddling friends, a subset of whom I socialize with in the off season
as well, and a group of car club members. That's enough to keep me
going. I follow a few newsgroups, although this one and the F1 racing
groups take more of my attention.

Sure, I could join FB and provide dummy information and a never-used
GMail address: I suppose that would protect my identity to a great
extent. But I dislike everything FB stands for. (Same with Twitter, BTW.)

But I'm an old fart who gets ink on his hands every morning from
reading the ... gasp ... paper newspaper and who reads hardcover books
and all sorts of other "no longer with it" things.

My guess is that all is not well in Usenet land. Google Groups is trying
to integrate itself with it's social network, Google+. This allows
posters to have their profiles within their posts and voting on whether
contested posts will be archived or deleted. It's Google attempt at
moving Usenet into the future. My guess is that traditional NNTP servers
won't be happy about this. Expect some turmoil.

FB is pervasive, the Queenland Public Service is about to start using for
all kinds of work-related interest groups.

I'm concerned about the social and psychological consequences of all these
hordes of so-called friends. My wife received a FB threat, just the usual
garbage, but she took it to our lawyer. I think that was swatting flies with
sledgehammers, but highlights one of the problems - lack of self-control by
users.

The reality is that computing is moving into a cloud/web-based realm and
I can't see where NNTP fits into this. I've tried some NNTP newsreader
apps on the iPad and they suck, so GG is the only option that works well
for me on mobile devices. If mobile devices are the future, then GG will
be the only means of accessing these groups. It ain't rocket science and

The AGF (Acoustic Guitar Forum...different from the AG Magazine
chat-site) and the UMGF are the two most-active forums on the internet.

Sad that the moderation is heavy-handed on the AGF, but sometimes it
creates a bit more civility. Other times it's just plain wrong. I'm
guessing the UMGF has similar issues.

It is hard to give up a "place" where we know friends will gather...

I don't get it. Isn't our world a technological one? Isn't technology
being driven by microprocessors? Aren't microprocessors mostly a
collection of tri-state transistors?

The amps have advanced somewhat since the 60s and 70s. Digital sound

I run my bass through a Bass Floor POD like an
outboard pre-amp either straight into the board or
into a 300wt Carver. DSP and solid state all the
way BUT for a guitar *nothing* beats a DrZ or a
Carr boutique tube amp. Period. End of story.
Ever. Unless the sound profile of what we expect
an electric guitar to sound like changes, tubes

My son got his bachelors in photography. Trust me,
it'll be a long, long time before film goes away
completely as long as there are pros and artists
out there who prefer it. It's somewhat analogous

Mind you, I have simulated rocking tubular electric guitar to the point
that I completely faked out some know-little friends who insist it can't
be done, and who have spen a lot of money on boutique tube guitar amps.

This is like saying factory-made paper will never replace hand-made
paper because some folks still prefer to make their own. I suspect that
in the future, there might be one or even zero sources for film. Maybe
the only photographic "film" will be silver halide on glass plates.

My son's been known to make his own glass plates
for his Deardorf 5 x 7. As long as there's a movie

I'm glad that there's some people still using glass plates. That's real
old-timey! My daughter took a photography class. I was surprised that
the class used film. I was also surprised that I could get film at
Walgrens. It was also surprising that my father and brother had no film
cameras that she could use. That's the breaks.

If I'm not mistaken, the push in the movie industry is towards streaming
motion pictures. The biggest film in history was shot without using film
and played in theaters using non-film projectors. Shooting films without
films and streaming to movie theaters will probably be the norm in the
future.

We just had a presentation at work from a person who, trust me, knows
about these things. He said that very little of what you hear in
hollywood movie scores - and I mean VERY little - is created by actual
orchestras any more. Virtually ALL of it is made by synthesized
instruments.

I also know someone in the LA music industry who told me years ago
that pretty much the only thing drummers are used for these days is
live performances. In the studio it's apparently very rare that the
drums aren't programmed synths - and that was years ago.

Film is dead. It's as dead as vinyl records. Yes, there are still
some cultists who like vinyl, and there will be people who like to
mess with film. There are civil war re-enactors and blacksmiths
around, too.

I suspect that pretty soon, the only place you'll be able to find film
will be at a photopgraphy exhibition at the local Renaissance Faire.

Film is dead in the movie industry. Well, dying anyway, but the
handwritin is as clearly on the wall as the death of vinyl albums was
in 1985. Digital movies are way chearper to record, way easier to
edit, they provide instant feedback, and distribution is way easier -
and all of that is way cheaper. Yes, there is no doubt about it, film
is dead.

That has been true in many instances for a long time. In other cases
film scores are still being played by orchestras, but the scene of the
crime is in Europe where the cost of such is much, much lower.

Depends on the style of music. I hang at a forum where some of the
world's best engineer/producers participate, people with long
discographies including a lot of material we all either know or at least
know about. These folks are still working steadily and using very good
drummers on their sessions. When it comes to programmed drums, they've
been there and they've done that, and they still do it when it fits the
music and/or the budget, but in general they've got people whacking
kits.

Hip hop, rap, a lot of typical pop, not so much - lots of synthetic
rhythm happening.

It depends entirely on what you are looking for. A DrZ won't be
everybody's choice, either. I think it was Brad Paisely on ACL
using DrZ, and it didn't come across very well. I could very
well see/hear him using some sort of Peavey solid state and it working
better ( or more likely, a big Fender ).

I tried a DrZ myself, and I really couldn't cozy up to it. it's
a wee bit embarrassing, but I couldn't figure out the cleans on the
thing. usually, those are pretty simple.

There are more sound profiles of what is expected of an electric guitar
than I could count. By the time I got done there would be more.

The big weakness of a lot of the modelling amps has been... the amp
itself. It was like a $2000 carburetor on a $50 car.

So Atomic Reactor made an amp you could plug PoD into, and right about
that time, Fender came out with a modeller with a tube power section,
and I got that. Nice li'l amp. It does fender but doesn't have
the limitations that Fender preamps frequently have.

The rmmga FB group has nothing to do with people going off in a huff
