Below is my conversation with a Martin guitar company spokes
person...my Martin just came apart...never mind the fact it sucked
when compared to Chinese made guitars...buyer beware!!!

Paula Primrose,

Funny thing is...everytime I try to post my review of your Martin D-28
product to privately owned websites (retailers of Martin guitars) they
never post my review...maybe cause it's so negative? I'm going to
start a blog/website that describes all the short comings of Martin
guitars and how they are over priced due to using Amercian labor...NOT
because they are actually quality products. We will poll visitors of
the website for their negative experiences with your products and
allow anyone to view these. I've a friend in NYC who's a web
programmer who's had the same success with your guitars (D-18) and we
are on the same page. He's a smart guy and we are going to spend much
time laying out the principles of guitar manufacturing...specifically
how Martin cannot make a better guitar than a Chinese worker at a
fraction of the cost. This is enough to make me want to become a
communist to be frank. Please keep an eye out for our website...I'll
be emailing you the link asap (saving your contact info as you read
this). Our site, name yet to be determined, will only list the short
comings, to provide balast to the rosey reviews only permitted by
other sites, with regard to Martin guitars. My $300 Yamaha 720 sounds
better than any new D-28 I've seen and played...I'm convinced it is
actually a better guitar and cannot prove otherwise. My Guild GAD-50,
Chinese built no less, blows the doors off my D-28...no comparison.
At a whopping cost of $630...and that includes tax!!! Thanks for
your time, Stuart Jordan

Good Morning,

Thank you for contacting Martin. No this is not typically of our
instruments. It sounds like the guitar

could be dried out. You can take your guitar to a service center to
see what can be done and the cost.

If you have any other questions let me know. Thanks

Best regards,

Subject: Second owner of D28 has to vent a little...ask for help.

Just bought a 2000 year model D28...used from original owner...this
was 12/11/08. Starting 12/29/08, approximately, the top's finish
starting cracking like a sheet of glass. Within 36 hours from that
time the back comes unglued to the sides and the back cracks in no
fewer than a dozen places. It's going to cost almost as much to fix
the guitar as what I paid for it (fix cracks, glue back together and
refinish > $1k).

Is this typical of Martin guitar quality or ??? I've two chinese made
guitars (Yamaha & Guild) that truely stand out compared to what I've
seen thus far from Martin.

Anyone wants to help me salvage this guitar or am I the new owner of a
very expensive paper weight?

Sorry , Man, but Paula is correct. It seems you bought a used guitar that
hadn't been properly taken care of. That is not Martin's fault. Improper
temp and humidity will destroy any acoustic guitar along with making it
sound like crap.

It looked fine when I bought it...

What I do know...is before it went south...it still didn't sound as
good as a cheap Chinese made guitar. That is Martin's fault.

If as you say the D-28 'sucked' when compared with your Chinese made
instruments, why did you buy it? You've obviously either bought a used
instrument which has been badly treated, or have abused it yourself through
abrupt extreme temp. and/or humidity changes.

Your post is juvenile, and Ms. Primrose responded with restraint.

If you cannot appreciate the difference between a Martin and Asian copies,
for heavens' sake don't squander the difference in price.

Martin, like any other company which manufactures large numbers of
instruments, will produce a dog from time to time but they have a long and
honourable history of doing the right thing when it comes to standing behind
honest warranty claims. Your claim is neither honest nor covered under
warranty.

You are entitled to your opinion, but posting a header like 'Martin guitars
are awful products' goes beyond opinion and may be actionable slander.

The truly frightening thing about your declaration that the superiority of
Chinese products makes you want to be a communist is that in North America
you are not only allowed to vote, but to breed!

Any guitar whose sound and/or playability doesn't do it for me goes,

*Do* keep in mind that OP likely bought his Martin for the same reason a
lot people do; because he believed the hype. While Martins are better
overall than they have been for quite some time it's still possible to
get a dud that shouldn't have left the factory.

Nope, that was the warning that should have caused you to return it for a
refund. When wood dries out it shrinks. The finish shows the stress by
cracking first, followed by a tug of war between the glue joints and the
wood. The wood cracks, the joints fail, to relieve the stress.

Take it to a Luthier for a post mortem and they'll tell you why it
failed. Slandering Martin will get you nothing.

I hate to sound harsh, but you exhibited a large lack of judgement in
buying a guitar that didn't sound good. Also, you show a lack of,
what's the word, knowledge or intelligence or life experience, by
generalizing from a single USED/HISTORY UNKONWN guitar to an entire
company with a long term quality reputation and which manufatures
thousands of guitars each year. That just doesn't make sense and
you're embarassing yourself.

The Martin rep's response was right on and very professional in that
she didn't insult you.

By the way, I own no Martin guitars and never had, but what you're
saying makes absolutely no sense at all.

Stuart,

I'm not a big fan of Martin. The sound doesn't do anything for me. But
they are well made and they do have a good warranty.
The separation of the finish from the top may be associated with sudden
temperature changes. Was this guitar shipped to you?
The back problem sounds like a long term humidity problem. I'd expect to
see other evidence of "dry guitar". You clearly got an estimate for repair
so what did the luthier think caused your problems? Have you raised this
problem with the seller?
You also complain about the tone. Why did you buy a guitar that you don't
like? Sorry, but the whole tone of your letter seems to place a lot of blame
on Martin for no obvious reason.

I bought my first Martin in 1964, used, and today I have three. I also
have several other guitars one of which is an expensive custom. I have
no complaints about my Martin guitars, one of which dates to the 1960's.
On the other hand, since that first buy, I have come to understand
just what I want in a guitar, and how to pick individual instruments
that meet my needs. My newest Martin I bought in a very fine guitar
store (Cotton Music, Nashville), and I played several instruments in the
store, including more than one example of the model I decided upon,
before select the one that I bought. Come to think of it, I bought my
oldest Martin from Gruhn in Nashville. I believe there's a pattern here.

As the others have said, you bought, so did I the first time, a pig in a
poke in buying a used guitar. I don't know why you bought if the
Chinese guitars are so much better, but perhaps you didn't realize that
until you had already made the purchase.

I just noticed that you imply that you paid only $1000 for a D-28. I'm
not conversant with the current value, but that seems a very low price
to me. Could it be there was a reason for the cut-rate price? You know
that if you had bought new, the guitar would be fixed under warranty.

Regardless, it's not Martin's fault that you didn't buy wisely. If you
really don't care for Martins, fine, buy other brands. I trust you
realize your campaign is not likely to do much to affect the reputation
of Martin guitars - not while there are thousands of satisfied owners
all over the world.

Stuart,

I own 7 Martin Guitars.

D28 Marquis (So So tone , but bought for a different reason)
M3SC (AWESOME tone, on my short list)
M38 (sweet old beater)
000-15S (great lap guitar, great tone)
5-16GT (small but nice)
DM (for an all lamenate model, very bluegrassy tone, nice)
LXK2 (always amazed at the sound of this guitar)

They are all nice instruments tonally and structurally sound. As my
comments show above, the little LXK2 still blows me a way when I play it and
my M3SC is on my short list... Now, that said, I know there are good and bad
in every Makers inventory and I have played my share of Martin dogs, but I
didn't buy them cause they were just that....dogs. As far as your Martin I
could understand it looking good when you got it and then quickly falling
apart, and I will bet it is humidity related... the finsh crazing almost
certain. However, if it didn't sound as good as your Chinese made guitars
and you still bought it anyway, well my friend that would be your fault and
your's alone. Did you think that after you bought it, it would somehow
miraculously start sounding better? Not going to happen. And I'd have to
agree with the others, just because this and a few other Martin's you've ran
across were poor tone or workmanship doesn't mean the EVERY Martin guitar
is. I will say, that as with any large guitar manufacturer they have had
their good years and their bad. And I have seen them need quite a bit of
setup and work coming straitght from the factory, this is not acceptable to
me, but is a fact. However,, the way your trying to go about it (IMHO) makes
you sound more like a person with sour grapes and a chip on his shoulder and
less of a person wanting to make constructive progess on getting your guitar
repaired...

My daddy always said - You attract more flies with honey than you do shit...

Sincerely,

TimW

Anyway, when it was brought out from the back of the store, I looked

Side note.... I walked out of Acoustic Roots with that guitar and a

That's an excellent question for a rookie buyer.
For someone experienced enough to know *why* an
otherwise good guitar sounds like crap there are
opportunities to invest in potential if the price
is right. I've seen total crap guitars totally
transformed with as little as a fresh set of
strings and a good setup.

250,000 miles on that same orig. factory engine, no trouble.
Unfortunately, the bodywork used to rust very quickly here on Fords in
this damp climate.

Propman, Kathy Wingert is a builder who many of us have met at

She builds absolutely KILLER guitars (and her daughter does the
magnificent inlay work), she plays the living HELL out of them, and
she sings like an angel.

the honor of meeting Alan, and Jamie, and Kathy, and have played
guitars by several others. I have 2 Dunwells which are vastly more
guitar than my talents merit.

QED Chris Rockliffe's Dad's old Fender.

Chris had a Fender dread which was previously owned by his father, who
had put quite a few miles on it (like 250000) and I had the luxury of
playing it at UK3 in a Jam with Dorgan, Pugh, Park & Evans
(just to name the 'Muricans) and about 25 others. It ripped my fingers
to shreds - Jeez - it was awful, but I stuck with it because I was
swapping solos with David Kilpatrick and a few others and it was the
loudest guitar in the room.

The next morning I couldn't even hold a fork to eat my breakfast. Al
Evans really wanted me to play his Gallagher and I couldn't even look
at it, which was a shame because it was a sweet guitar (prolly still
is - I expect he's still got it).

Anyway, years later, Chris got the Fender set up properly and guess
what - it was a belter - still crazily loud, but actually possible to
play without having to go to casualty afterwards. Says something for
sound guitarmaking - almost anything is repairable.

The guitar was about to come apart. Comparisons of how it sounded even
compared to a trashcan lid, when the instrument is in such condition,
are irrelevant to how it might sound if sound.

Just a warning..if you ever play one of Kathy's guitars, you'll be forever
comparing any and all future guitars to that one experience. And they will

The Sound that I'm referring to is the sound of the Martins that I have
played. Sorry that wasn't clear. Sorry if that lead you to think that there
was a magical "Martin Sound". To be more clear I have never played a Martin

I bought it after only owning nothing but low priced items...been
playing 16 years...never had the money to burn before. I played a
D-28 sitting in a shop in Manhattan...sounded pretty sweet. Then I
found one on E-bay...dude ended the bidding early and I bought it
directly from him. The thing looked "MINT". Only one lite mark on
the neck where he had been wearing a ring. The thing glowed in the
dark it looked so perfect. First thing I noticed after getting
it...it sounded dull. Replaced the strings...sounded better, but
within three days the sound was gone again.

Had it less than two weeks before the finish on the top started
cracking...withing 36 hours after the finish starts to crack the back
comes apart...literally. I live in a humid climate. Also, I've owned
guitars and take great care of them. Was I a fool for buying a guitar
before playing it? The answer is yes. Just I believed too much of
the hype about Martin...guess I expected too much of Martin...

Kevin,

You are a great friend. If your mom or dog dies and you need
consoling...you know who to come to first. I'd give my left nut to be
the first person to speak to you after your loosing out on
something...I mean that.

You also must live in a republican state...call it a lucky guess.

When you are done poking your sister, aunt and/or cousin...please
remove foot from mouth and commit yourself to a home for the mentally
handicaped.

Your friend for life...XOXO,

I think you expected too much of the ebay vendor. Not all D-28 guitars
are alike. That the shop had one you liked clearly didn't mean that any
D-28 would be the same. It's very likely that the previous owner, or
owners, had not treated the guitar right. Perhaps the guy that sold it
to you knew that, or didn't. It's very unlike a Martin to come apart
the way yours did. I've had one in my hands since 1978 and it's fine,
except for the dings I've put in it.

Perhaps it's time to mention that guitars are made of wood, and wood
isn't all alike. No two pieces are exactly the same. This means that
from any factory, turning out thousands of guitars a year, they will not
all be the same. Folks around here say, if you play one you like in a
store, buy that one. Don't be fooled into buying the same model from
the back room, even if the "same model" has never been played, you can't
be sure it will sound and play the same.

In your case, the problem is greater, because you simply don't know what
happened to the guitar before you got it. If it was owned in a cold
climate, and kept in a heated home without humidifying, it could be,
would probably be severely dried out. That drying can be extremely
harmful to the guitar and might very well be what happened to your
instrument.

If I bought a used car that had never had the oil changed or the brakes
checked or the air cleaner changed or the tires rotated, I wouldn't be
surprised if I had some problems with the car. In fact, I'd be lucky if
I didn't have severe problems with it, costing a lot of money.

Your guitar is like that car. You didn't know it hadn't been cared for;
perhaps you didn't know what a guitar needs in the way of care, but the
lack of care can cause severe problems.

Stuart, you took a chance and it didn't pan out. Believe me, I can
understand your frustration. I clearly read that frustration in your orig.
post. I think it was misdirected which I can also (almost understand.) No

You've crossed a line. You'll probably get more responses but honestly, you

No. IMO. The issues are specific to that transaction. Plenty of
people buy guitars online and it can be done carefully, with approval
periods, for example. Normally you risk the cost of the return
shipping only. You're generalizing inaccurately.

>Just I believed too much of the ...

No. You're mixing up all kinds of different issues here, imho,
Stuart. And generalizing illogically --- again. Since you asked, I
think you just need to just cool it and figure out how you're make the
best of things and cut your losses.

Two things I 'd suggest you consider:

1) Its possible you might have purchased that even after playing it.
You said it was ok at first, yes? You might have taken the exact same
risk.

2) That guitar might be great after its repaired. It could very well
be a great guitar that will have been worth rescuing once you look
back.

So what are you gonna do? The crusade's a wste of time, imo.

Sherm,

I couldn't agree with you more...crusading won't get me playing any
faster. Decided I'm going to put the thing in it's case and give
myself a few weeks/months to cool down. Then I'm going to repair
it...do a custom finish job on it. The $1400 I paid for it will be a
very cheap lesson learned...as I've already learned a lot. Just
ethusiasm got the best of me...can't believe I let down my guard.

Got a job that afforded me to buy a nice guitar and I let myself
slip. Before I'm done this guitar will both play great and sound
great..money be damned.

I have to put in a plug here....the Chinese made Guild GAD-50....it's
a great solid spruce/rosewood guitar. It has bottom, mid-range and
highs that make me tear up. That's with three week old strings.
Action is adjustable and comes from the factory playing like a strat.
Honestly I believe you pay a premium for American made guitars due to
labor and sales. Guess you live and learn.

Kevin doesn't live in a Republican state, or any other kind of state.
Further, he is a longtime luthier and Martin repairman who has made more
guitars than you or I have played, and I've been playing for more than
45 years. You condemn yourself by your own writings. I've tried to
speak to you as a rational, mature adult, but that's becoming
