I've been playing for just a few months, but I'm hooked. I've been learning
on some student guitar that looks like it must have cost about $50 around
the mid 70's.

The wife said, "for your birthday, let's get you a real guitar". It was my
birthday yesterday.

Needless to say...I enthusiastically hit the music stores but quickly had
sticker shock.

I found a used Takamine EG10C with a price of $750, including a case. I have
no idea if this is a great deal or not. It certainly looks ok, and sounds
super with the 15-20 chords that I know... :-) hahahaha

I felt like I was at a used car lot with the salesman - sheesh. Anyway, he
tried to tell me that this was probably the best buy in the store right now,
as it probably sold for around $1200 when it was new. Am I getting a line of
bull?

Last question...am I setting myself up for slaughter unless I take someone
with me that KNOWS guitars? I kind of feel like when I bought my first
car...very nervous.

Yes you are getting a line of bull. I bought a Tak EN-10C for $950 new
with a deluxe hard case in August.

The G series is Takamine's lower end line. So it should be considerably
less. I would recommend taking a friend who's up on prices in your area
with you so you don't get fleeced.

That sounds like list price for that guitar - i.e. HIGH! Last time I
looked, my local dealer (which usually has pretty good prices) was pricing
those at $599-$649. He'll generally go down an additional 10% or so, too...

As Veer said, the G series is Tak's low end: for the most part laminated
tops. I have one, but just recently bought a Tak FP-460SC. The difference
is amazing - extremely noticeable.

If you're willing to spend $750, definitely look for a solid top. You're
going to notice much better sound. For that price you should be able to
find something with a solid top and if you're willing to spend a little more
(up to $1000) you can probably find a great instrument.

Once you've convinced yourself to get a solid top (play some and you'll see
why... IMO you'll be much happier in the long run...) trust your ears and
your fingers. Find the guitar that *you* like to play and listen to the
most. You will often notice a difference in sound/playability between two
guitars of the same model... Play lots of guitars. If you can, take
someone who knows about guitars with you - it can't hurt. Most of all,
enjoy the hunt - it's kind of like buying a new car...

Feel free to ask questions - you'll generally get a pretty straight answer
on the newsgroup - although there can be a lot of brand loyalty! ;-)

Good luck,

- Chris
