Hello

I just saw this post at flatpick-l. I've played two made by Mr Zeidler and
they were wonderful instruments.

A sad note to let everyone know that John Zeidler (Zeidler Guitars) passed
away last night. This is a very sad day for me and a great loss to the
guitar building world.

I believe he was only about 44 years old. One of his guitars is part of
Scott Chinery's (he's also deceased) Blue Guitars collection, which appeared
in the Smithsonian.

Terrible news. I've played a couple as well and both were masterpieces.
Very rich tone, utterly perfect craftsmanship, and a great artistic flair
visually.

I have played a couple of his archtops and they were fantastic, but,
unfortunately I couldn't afford the more than $10,000 that they cost.

It is quite a shock when somebody so talented leaves us at such a young age.

I've also played some of John Zeidler;s guitars, and met him last summer at
Healdsburg.

Does anyone know for a fact whether he has died? This might just be an
unpleasant and incorrect rumor.

Wade,

I would suspect it is true as John has been fighting his illness for quite
some time and it recently got much worse. He was in the hospital in Texas
and the luthier community was rallying to donate blood for treatment. But
he was in pretty bad shape and this would have been his third go-around with
chemo. But his white blood cell count needed to be raised before further
treatment was possible (this is my understanding of the situation.) What's
sad is that leaves behind a wife and daughther and we will all miss him.
There is rumor that the archtop community will be building a guitar together
to be auctioned to benefit his family. That's about all I know.

It is sad, Lance, but thanks for filling in some of the gaps for us.

I'm just glad I got to meet him and marvel at his work while he still around.
Sorry to lose him.

*************
The flat top community is going to be building a guitar to auction for the
benefit
of John's family, as well. Michael Hornik called us recently and invited
Mark to
participate in the building process, along with many other luthiers. It seems
that about 10 builders are going to have their hands in the process. It should
be a wonderful experience for all of us!

Our thoughts are with John's wife and little girl!

Peace!

Copied this from 13th fret, posted by Howard Emerson:

Hi all,
This past weekend I went to John Monteleone's house for
a dinner after a really busy day at the Classic American Guitar Show.
It was a nice
respite after all the noise. It's always great to be
with John and his wife, Tina.
It was there that I met Linda Manzer, and as some of you
may be aware, she is coordinating a project aimed at helping to defray
some of the
costs of John Zeidlers illness.
Herewith is an e-mail that Linda sent me this afternoon.
Best regards,
Howard Emerson

I spoke to John Zeidler over a month ago and asked if we
could do this for him. He was touched and appreciated the spirit of it
- a group of his
friends and colleagues building a guitar for him as he
battled his illness, a gesture of support and a way to help offset the
financial burden.
John Zeidler was involved with the project at its birth
and was being kept apprised of the progress. The top and back were
selected and supplied by
JR from his shop. So that was the starting point. Photos
are being taken of the progress of the guitar as it is being built.
Fourteen luthiers are
participating in this archtop project. Many more
builders kindly offered their support after we started. It has been
very heartwarming to see the
community pull together this way, and people have jumped
in so willingly to give their time and energy. This will be an 18'
archtop guitar. A Calton
case has been donated by Al Williams.

The guitar will travel from shop to shop until it is
finished, with all 14 builders participating in the design. To date,
the top has been carved in Long
Island (Monteleone) and the back in California
(Ribbecke), and the sides are currently being bent in Seattle
(Andersen). After that it's off to
Hawaii to be have binding put on (Steve Grimes) and so
on til it's finished. It's rather incredible because builders who have
never worked with each
other are working as a team to make this very special
instrument. A mark of our respect and friendship for JR.

How this guitar will be sold is yet to be determined,
All proceeds will go to the Zeidler family.

This is the path the guitar will travel from shop to
shop as each of us works on this guitar:
Linda Manzer, Ontario Canada

John Monteleone, New York

Tom Ribbecke, California

Steve Andersen, Washington

Steve Grimes, Hawaii

Bill Comins, Pennsylvania
John Buscarino, North Carolina

Mark Campellone, Rhode Island

Bob Benedetto, Florida

Ted Megas, Oregon

Tom Cerletti. California

Bill Collings, Texas

Richard Hoover, California

Mark Lacey. Tennessee

This is just a quick explanation of the project but
gives you an idea of the heart and soul going towards the project.

Thanks,

Linda

Michael has asked me as well to help out with inlays, my understanding is
the inlays will be shared with Larry Robinson, Grit Laskin, Judy Threet and
myself. According to Michael he was running out of jobs to do before he was
half way through the list of contacts. It's a great thing and I'm honored to
be a part of it. I hope someone steps up to purchase these guitars for what
they are worth. It's also great to know people like Linda and Michael who
take the time to spearhead this.
