Greetings all

I bought the DVD version of the "Concert for George" and must admit
that the whole show is simply awesome, for lack of a better word. That
Anoushka Shankar sure can play the sitar. But the main reason I'm
posting here is because I'm wondering what kind of guitar Dhani is
playing. It has an almost-heart shaped sound hole ands i can't seem to
find any info on this axe. Any of you connoisseurs know what kind of
guitar that is

TIA

Could it be a Gretsch G3601?

Actually it wasn't that....I remember seeing a diamond shaped logo on
the headstock....quite large inlay....also the guitar was cedar
colored IIRC and the logo looked like natural wood...not sure

Thanks for trying Conrad

It's not a Gretsch, but a handmade guitar. I remember reading an article about
it in one of the guitar magazines, but can't remember the builder's name -
sorry.

Perhaps someone who's more of a record-keeper can find the article I'm
referring to....

Anyway, Harrison had at least one and possibly several instruments built by
this same guy, and was very fond of them. I don't know if he used them as
stage guitars, but I do know he posed with them in a lot of photos, and the
impression I received is that they were the acoustic guitars he chose to play
at home.

Hope this helps.

Looks like you may have it....I went to the Zemaitis page and found
that George and a number of other famous guitarists were very
interested in those. And there is a very similar model there....12
string......hmmm...think I'll keep looking anyway

And Wade, I'll keep you posted

Ciao

This is just a guess of course, but that one looks a lot like a
picture and profile I saw many many years ago of the acoustic Clapton
used on "Can't Find My Way Home." It was about the same size, had the
heart-shaped soundhole, and some of the inlay around the soundhole had
a purplish tint. Don't remember the luthier though.

Bingo. That's the name I was groping for.

Here's a link to a biography page on the man:

http://www.privateguitarcollector.com/ztonyzemaitisbiography.htm

Then DaBoss posted a link to a photo of a young-looking George Harrison playing
a Zemaitis jumbo:

Wait! It's not George, it's his son! The apple obviously didn't fall too far
from the tree there...

That's the first time I've seen that Zemaitis jumbo, Boss - previously I've
seen photos of Harrison with a Zemaitis parlor and a 12 string.

So he clearly had a stable of them.

Well from what I've read on the website, George fell in love with one
of Clapton's and started collecting them.
Another thing I noticed on the DVD....at one point someone is
interviewing Dhani and Jeff Lynne and Dhani is holding an old
Gibson....ES125... I know that model because I have one just like it.
I haven't seen too many of those around. To think I almost sold that
guitar at one point. And to think I use it as an old beater....Could
be worth someting huh?

Sounds rather like a guitar made by the late, great - and sadly missed - Tony
Zemaitis.

Yeppers...that's a Zemaitis.
Tony was a really good friend since around 1958 and I always promised myself
that I would buy one of his weird and wonderful acoustics one day. Just never
got around to it, sadly!
I DID buy one of his metal-front electrics, though. Sold it about four years
ago - damnit! - as I wanted to get a three pickup model made. It never got
made. No-one ever thought that Tony would die so young, he was so full of life.
A marvelous eccentric in the traditional English mold; he once built an
airplane in his back garden without using any plans. When it was finished - and
it looked STUPENDOUS - he was rather chagrined to find out that the wing area
was insufficient to allow it to rise from the ground. Not one to be downhearted
at such a setback, he sawed the wings off, added a few more feet, and took to
the air like a seagull.
A truly great guy who marched to a very different drummer. The world needs more
like him.
John Pearse.

Hey guys
Just want to thank everyone that kicked in for kicking in and getting
me info on that guitar....I really learned alot. To think I've been
playing guitar since I was 13 (33 years ago...where have they gone?)
and at the risk of sounding completely out in left field, must admit
that I had never heard of Tony Zemaitis. Just goes to show how much
you can learn from a great NG like this one. Actually, I think i've
learned more about guitars in this NG in the past 2 or 3 years than
all those other years combined...but enough about me....Think I'll go
strum a little now....Ciao

Again...thanks all
