I just picked up a used Recording King RNJ-25 that is the most
amazing guitar for the money that I have ever bought-- and I have a
Larrivee Parlor Rosewood and Walnut O3 that I got back when they were
really a steal. It is a Nick Lucas knock off with solid Sitka top,
solid Maple B/S, a short scale, with 14 frets to the body.

Ten years ago when I decided to spend a little money on a guitar, I
tested the Gibson Nick Lucas reissues and was very disappointed. They
seemed extremely tight and thumpy, the sustain almost non-existent. I
ended up buying a Gibson AJ which I still have and love.

Recently I learned that a friend of a friend was selling his Recording
King, which I'd heard sounded great. He was asking $600 with a case an
added pickup, and bone bridge pins (it comes with bone saddle and
nut.) You usually pay about $750 for these new, which is still a very
good price.

This guitar sounds great. It is very loud, the bass is clear as a
bell, and it strums far better than I expected, with some of the
compressed sound of the larger bodied Gibson. It's a far more
versatile guitar than the good vintage Nick Lucases I have had the
pleasure to play (but could never afford) over the years.

The thing is also very good as far as fit and finish. And it's
beautiful. The only two things that are less than impressive, are the
fire stripe pick guard, which is curling up, and the figure on the
Maple is not the most ornate. These are not problems for me. I was
prepared from pictures on the internet to be put off by the head stock
logo and decorations, it reminded me of some of the overdone Blueridge
head stocks, but in person I kind of like it.

Anyway, I am sorta bowled over by this guitar and wonder if anyone
else had played one?

I haven't played the model you have but I got a Recording King RAJ-27
(J45 rosewood clone) to replace the Blueridge BG-140 I traded for a
new paint job in one of my bathrooms. I'm more than pleased with it,
especially for the money I paid. I'm gonna replace the bridge pins on
it the next time I change strings... if I ever change strings.

I played a OOO 12 fret that failed to dazzle me.
Maybe I expected more from something Eric
Schoenberg was involved with. Maybe I'm
irretrievably spoiled with my McAlister 12 fret Lucas.

It's difficult to compare across that great a difference in materials
and construfction detail. When I took Shaidri Blueridge cruising because
we knew it didn't make sense to put a pickup in the '57 000-28, nor to
keep hauling it to saloons and checking it on planes, she played several
decent instruments and was completely unimpressed. At the end of it she
admitted she was spoiled by the little Martin. And so, she wound up with
the J-50 that Lance had retopped for her road guitar.

Yeah, choosing guitars is a very personal thing, as mentioned in another
thread. However, I do remember thinking that the batch of RK guitars (low
end of their range) that came into our local store seemed like very good
value for money, both in terms of tone and workmanship.

FWIW, for anyone interested in the Nick Lucas style, Tanglewood make a nice
L-00 knockoff, except they stuck a Martin style headstock on it. Come to
that, the Gibson Blues King ain't so bad at about 1/3 the price we would be
paying in Oz.

Maybe something's changed since I last looked.

Could be wrong, but I haven't heard of a 000 12 spec'd by Schoenberg... He
did spec a 00 and 0, with early 40's adirodack bracing, adding a cutaway.
And they're pretty good guitars, rivaling Martins current retro-repro
work... I say that having bumped one against the Martin version, a-b style
testing, and they hold their own.

But to expect them (or any factory guitar for that matter) to match a
quality handmade from an established builder is not being realistic.

I don't know if "expect" is the right word. At
some point what you play the most becomes your
norm. The shock comes when you play somebody elses
production guitar. My reactions can range from
cringing to total indifference. I'm less willing
to make allowances and my opinions are weighted
far more heavily to the "would I buy it" side than
the "would I recommend it to a friend" side. It's
my loss and if something ever happens to my McA's
or even the BTO Taylor I'd never be able to
replace them. If I had to play what I could afford
now I could wind up not playing at all mainly
because the concessions to my fat fingers won't
let me settle for a skinny neck on a production
guitar. The ROS-06
(http://www.recordingking.com/guitars_ros06.html)
I played was no more a Schoenberg than a
VoyageAire is a Leach. Are they good guitars and
worth the price? Sure but that doesn't mean I'm
excited enough about them to buy one. That's the
only reality that counts.

Agreed and you made good points, but IIUC those aren't the ones Schoenberg
was involved in spec'ng and prototyping and don't have his "name" on them.
These are:

(And they still won't be one of his commissioned guitars... but they're
pretty good.)

I was under the impression that Recording King was
Eric's offshore brand, essentially his company. Am
I wrong?
