Here's my list of Lowden players:

Paul Brady
Richard Thompson
Mary Chapin-Carpenter
Declan Sinnott
Christy Moore (I've heard he owns at least one)

and several guitarists I don't know, but have seen here in Ireland.
Lowdens are becoming more & more popular here. In general, each of their models
has a beautiful tone. I have an O-32 & I don't intend to change, ever. It's the
most beautiful guitar I've ever heard.

If you have not heard these two...they have produced some great music.

I believe she has been seen with a Lowden in her arms now and then..

Add:
Pierre Bensusan
Alex De Grassi
Shawn Colvin
Bob Dylan (!?)
Guy Snape

There is one other that I know of (that has not been mentioned). It
is this Hawaiian player. Big guy. He has these ads in Acoustic Guitar,
but the issue I have with me at work does not have his ad in it.

I own a Martin Custom 15, which I like a great deal. I'm a little tired
of holding my right elbow so far out in front of me, thought, so I've
been thinking about buying a second acoustic guitar. For the last 9
months or so I have spent more than a few hours in music stores playing
candidate guitars.
I've played several Lowdens, both of which allegedly had walnut sides and
back. I don't remember model numbers, but I concentrated on a small
guitar with a cutaway and a narrow neck. It was a very playable guitar,
comfortable to hold and quite loud. I played this guitar several times
and only recently eliminated it from further consideration, primarily
because of how it sounded to me on my last visit. It's loud, and has an
unusual tone - more "compact" than many, very punchy. Unfortunately, on
my last visit, it sounded somewhat "honky" to me. The music store person
changed the strings, but it still sounded honky. I took this to mean
that I was finally hearing what the guitar sounded like, not that my
hearing was off on that day. Of course it might be that the other music
store I go to has a comfortable sofa on which you can try out their fancy
guitars, but I don't think so.

Perhaps someone can provide a more fair word than honky? Anyhow, I
suspect that this tone might be useful in some cases - I've heard that, in
ensemble playing, it's useful if the instruments stay out of each other's
way - it seems to me that this Lowden would "specialize" in an unusual
frequency range. If anyone can elaborate on this, I'd be interested in
hearing about it.

That day I also played what seemed to be a rosewood J-40 (Martin) which
completely blew me away. Unbelievable resonance, warmth, highs, lows,
balance. I've played many many Martins, Taylors, some Guilds, Larrivees;
I've played other Martin jumbos, and haven't liked them much, but this one
was amazing. Better, I think, than the Taylor cutaway jumbo (855?) which
I like a lot.

Anyhow, I'm leaning towards one of the smaller, non-cutaway Taylors. Such
a comfortable guitar to play (might be that sofa, though) and very good
sounding, too. I can't keep the model numbers straight without a program,
but I think it's a "limited edition" or something like that. Cedar top,
apparently, which is a nice break from the highs you get with spruce (at
least that's the way it seems to me).

Actually, it occurs to me that there might be an inverse relationship
between waist size and desired guitar size - as my waist grows, smaller
guitars appeal to me more. Or is it just that my ear is maturing.? Maybe
my arms are too short.

Well, that's enough bandwidth for one night. Please feel fee to
comment. Note however, that any rude comments that I recognize will be
met with an appropriate reaction.

Don't forget Pierre Bensusan and Acoustic Alchemy.

I play a L25C that I've had for about 10 years. Check through the rmmga
directory to see who else participates in this newsgroup and plays them.

There are not too many Lowden Guitars out there, so it should be relatively easy to complile a list of
players, professionals and fumblers (like me) . If you play one or know of someone who plays one,
please let me know. You are welcome to add a comment about their performance - compared and
contrasted with other acoustics on the market.

Michael Hedges uses one occasionally (with *low* tuning)

Lisa Gade uses one, although her main guitar is a Martin

The Hawaiian slack-key player Tim mentioned must be Ray Kane.

Add to this list the Eagles (don't remember which one -- it is plainly
seen on the "Hell Freezes Over" Video).

Also Peter Mayer (hope that is spelled right) -- guitarist with
Jimmy Buffett (uses it for slide, of all things...)

Oh yeah, don't forget me, too! (Lowden 032c, and loving it...)

I saw a Richard Thompson solo acoustic show in November. He stood and
played his Lowden cutaway the whole time. Sounded great.

He plays a Lowden S5 on his amazing accoustic album "wolves" from 1994.

not sure which one....

Michael Card, a pretty well-known Christian artist, plays a Lowden
as well as an Olson, (made in Minneapolis). Interestingly, his
guitars are strung right-handed, but he plays left-handed,
fingering all his chords backwards.

El McMeen in the first edition.
Hope you'll all check it out.

Maybe I missed it, but after 7 postings on this subject I'm
suprised that no one listed Pierre Bensusan yet. He has been
playing Lowdens for essentially all of his career, and has avidly
endorsed them. There is a discussion with George Lowden on page
21 of his "The Guitar Book."

However, Pierre bought his Lowden when George still built them. This he no
longer does remaining only as a consultant with the company - in order to
let them use the name I think.

The original Lowdens were superb guitars and very different from today's
range.
