Martin Simpson is scheduled to play here in St. John's,
Newfoundland on July 3.

What is he like? Do you recommend him?

I guess I will eventually have a look at his web site
and YouTube videos, but I am also interested in
personal reviews/recommendations of him.

Among the finest fingerstyle guitarists esp in celtic style. I would be very surprised if on your way out you weren;t amazed by what you had just heard.

I bought his Bourgeois signature model guitar, because it was designed
for his slide playing style, which I admire greatly.

He is brilliant. You must see him.

He's astonishing. Also a really nice bloke. |He let me have a go
on his Sobell -- I could hardly fret a note. He was kind enough
not to tell me it's a man's guitar.

Pro:
Great guitarist - amazing technique (count his fingers sometime, I'm
sure he has some extras hidden somewhere).

Con:
Sometimes a little over-ornamented for my taste, and some of his playing
veers from having a style to having mannerisms. I tend to prefer his
less busy playing.

His singing can be a bit of an acquired taste, working much better on
some things than others.

Still well worth going to see and hear. If you're expecting true celtic,
you might be disappointed - he's an Yorkshireman (born in Scunthorpe,
now living in Sheffield) who lived for some time in the US and is more
influenced by English and American traditions than Scottish or Irish, at
least to my ears.

IMHO, YMMV, etc...

He's a regular guest at our folk club. Thoroughly excellent guitarist,
thoroughly nice and modest bloke.

Why - high action? Heavy gauge strings?

He did explain, but I don't really remember. Other Sobells are
not difficult, so perhaps it was set up for a professional. The
sound was astonishing

The original was crossposted widely, so if responders didn't trim the newsgroups the responses may well have been crossposted...
