I had a single Fisher french horn from about 1969 and wore it out. Could not
find any fisher french horns on display or for sale anywhere since '96/
Purchased a Conn 10.-D 2 yrs ago and just now getting adjusted. What is the
difference between the 8D and 10D which is the better horn.? I have played
2nd n 4th horn since 1976 because voice changed thru the years and it is easier
for me to player the middle to lower range. Now playing in a community band
and have been playing horn since 1951. No one can give me a straight
answer. United Musical instruments email is always in error. Is there
anyone on your page that can answer? Thankyou, Damz...@cs.com

The difference between a 8D and a 10d is the same as the difference between a
8D and a 6D.

The difference is 2D.

I have both an 8D & 10D. I switched to the 10D because I mainly play in small
ensembles these days and needed a smaller bore horn for upper register work.
The 8D will produce a 'bigger' sound with less resistance, but the upper
register (above G2) is more difficult for the average player. You can't go
wrong with an 8D, there are a lot of used ones out there, if you go with a
used one, make sure you play it or have someone you trust try it.

8D's and 10D's have identical bore size (.468", or 11.89 mm). The 10D
has a slightly smaller bell. Biggest difference is the wrap, or
arrangement, of the tubing.

yes, I believe the 10D and 11D are the Geyer wraps. The 8D of course is your nickel
silver Kruspe style wrap. Of course Bell flare, bell size and lead pipe size all
play a part.
