Does anyone here know of another source for this vise?
I'm betting Stew-Mac's price for this vise is greatly inflated, but
despite my research attempts, I haven't found an alternative source of
supply for this vise.
Thanks in advance,
Mark
Stewmac's Guitar Repair Vise is a common-or-garden Cabinet Maker's
Vise - google it or take a look here...

but the nearest thing that I can find to their Ultimate Vise seems to
be the PanaVise here...

I'd be interested to learn what you turn up because I'm sure it must
be a pre-existing product sold under their name.
Good luck!
Nick
That's a ridiculous price for that vise. Can you make your own?
Dave
The last item looked pretty useful and cheap, so I ordered one.

Looks somewhat like a re-imagining of the Emmert patternmakers vise -
though those are not overly cheap when you can find one. More than that,
in fact, typically.

Chaiwanese knock-offs are perhaps still being made, though the
originals are preferred when you can get one. Hmm - knock off out of
stock here...perhaps not still being made in chaiwan either.

Hey, David,
Really nice to see you again!
Functional key to the Stew-Mac vise is the ball joint, which is
extremely strong and rigid. When you tighten up the fitting so as to
lock the ball joint, only an Act of God will move it! This I know,
because I have put my hand on a miniaturized version of this ball
joint which was part of a dental office appliance my wife uses. The
strength of the ball is nothing short of amazing.
The StewMac vise is the ideal also because of the length of the beam,
and the fact that the inner jaw rotates, such as on their
guitarmaker's vise.
To answer your question, in the absence of that 3-inch locking ball
joint, methinks I would not attempt to make the vise.
Another poster wrote that this vise indeed must be available
somewhere, and I long to find out....??Where???
Take care, David!
Mark
