Greetings,
Just for something silly to do, I fancy making a 4 string electric mandolin
based on the Yngwe Malmsteen tribute strat (with scalloped fingerboard of
course)!!!!!!!!
I`ve looked at various sites that tell you "how to relic a strat" but having
looked at old Fenders, one thing strikes me - the chippiness / flakeyness of
the final finish over the initial primer (Fullerplast)? which sanding and
buffing alone would not acheive.

Any suggestions for a couple of types of finish that would stick together
(but not too well)?
I generally finish with cellulose so something a bit cellulose resistant
should fit the bill.

Cheers
Soundfarmer Pete

You could always spray a thin coat of shellac over the primer. It would
cause the other lacquer to chip off more easily than a layer sprayed on
lacquer.

Thanks David,
Sounds perfect - I remember once spraying cellulose over a spirit primer and
that didn`t stick too well either ;-)

I've found the most convincing relic finish can be achieved by gigging
the instrument several nights a week for 20 years or so. It fools
everyone!

Too true but I did say I wanted to do something silly - a bit of light
relief ( I couldn`t do a mini Malmsteen and have it pristine now could I
:-)?
I suppose the trickiest aspect will be getting the right balance with
shortened springs and trem block - a spot of trial and error but should be a
laugh!

P.S. perhaps a little sticker that says "plink loud"

That should be interesting: a mandolin with a whammy bar!
