I'm building an electric guitar and want the neck to feel like those great
Ernie Ball/Music Man neck. The company uses a "gunstock oil-wax blend".
Anybody have any suggestion on how to emulate and apply this potion? Thanks
a lot,

The gunstock oil generally refers to Birchwood-casey Tru-Oil. It's
an oil blend of linseed oil, tung oil and perhaps some varnish.
You can get it at most gun stores.

I had an email from Ernie Ball on how they apply the finish. I lost
it along with my hard-drive. They said that they dip the neck in
Casey's true oil and rub it in. They then use of mixture of true oil
and Casey's gunstock wax and rub it in. The wax adds a bit of
slickness.

Birchwood-Casey makes both Gunstock wax and Tru Oil finish for stocks.
Browning makes one of the best waxes for use on guitars. I use it instead
of polish on my D-28s. I have used the Tru oil as a quick french polish on
old fiddles to cover scratches and nicks. Try your local shooters supply
store. Neither product is high in price.

Hello,I have used Birchwood Caseys Gun Stock oil on an ash body & maple
neck. You need to prep the wood with micromesh abrasive, which goes down
quite fine, wiping between coats with a tak rag .To apply the oil use your
finger or a clean cotton rag, wipe off excess after 1 minute .Leave over
night to dry .Use 0000 wire wool very lightly before next coat of oil.Repeat
this routine 5 times. After the 5th coat of oil leave to dry for 5 days,
polish with lemon oil on a clean rag Wipe off excess. You can achieve a matte
finish by using 0000 wire wool or the finest grade of micromesh can be used
to give a final polish. My son as used this guitar (tele type guitar)for the
last 2 years ,we have also finished a strat neck this way.It takes a bit of
time to finish this way but the end result is worthwhile.
best of luck Neil
P.S.
Micromesh is available from stewart macdonalds(U.S.A.) or David
Dykes Luthiers Supplies(U.K.)
