Out of the three aniline dyes, water soluble, alcohol soluble, and oil
soluble, which one is the best to tint nitrocellulose lacquer? I want a
transparent tint to the lacquer.

Lacquer is suspended in alcohol, so I'd guess you would use alcohol soluble
dye. But I wonder if a dye would be the best way to tint the lacquer. I'd
think a pigment might work better.

I'm saying this from a textile fiber background. Dye reacts chemically with
the fiber to color it where as pigment is more like paint on top of the fiber.

I don't know if hte aniline dye will react with the lacquer, but then if it
works as a pigment and gives the desired result...

One problem with alcohol soluble aniline dyes is that they are not
very lightfast. What I have always used are "Lightfast Woodstain
Powders from WoodFinishing Enterprises in WI, but I have not been able
to contact them for a couple years to reorder.
The next best choice is probably Behlen's Solar Lux NGR stain. This
is water soluble analine dyes (the most lightfast type) dissolved in
special solvents, so that they are Non Grain Raising. They can be
mixed with lacquer. Can order from Woodworker's Supply 800-645-9292,
or any place else that carries Behlen.

Stew Mac sells a metallic based liquid that's very color fast. Plus, it comes
in a variety of colors, which gives you a lot of mixing flexibility.

LMI and StewMac sell aniline dyes for lacquer tinting. You can use
either pigments or dyes, but the dies are transparent and allow the wood
to show through better. Pigment turns it into paint.

My apologies to the group for being so late with this:
I've been tinting nc lacquers with NGR non grain raising alcohol stains
for for a lot of years and it works quite well. The stuff I get up here
was from Mohawk finishing products out of Montreal, however I believe
that their stuff is made by Behlans (spelling?) and should be readily
available to you.
