I have a violin that has been in the family for some years. The marking
inside says Giovan Paolo Maggini brefcia 1633.
I know that Giovanni Paolo Maggini was an Italian violin maker dying in
1630. Is there any chance that this violin was made by Giovanni Paolo
Maggini or would it be a factory manufactured instrument, bearing the
company name, and is the date on manufacture is 1633. Any advice via email
would be appreciated.
Cheers

Judging by the label you have, the maker probably hinted on his work being
a copy by claiming an ironical year. I would guess its value depends on
the quality of the copying and the instrument's sound. As well, an
instrument in original (unmodernized) setup might make a interesting find
and add a clue to the actual date of manufacture. You'll need to show it
to someone.
