I am in Florence, Italy now and would like to buy a violin from local
violin makers for my son. Since I was burnt before buying violins in
foreign countries :-) I wonder if anyone has experience dealing with
Firenze liutaios? I would appreciate if you would post the names of
excellent, reasonable, and honest ;-) luthiers around Florence. Really
appreciate it. Ciao.

There are not so much liutaios in Florence. Try with the two Vettori,
which are brothers (Vettori Paolo - via Cavour 95 and Vettori Carlo
at Arte Liutaria - via Guelfa 3 - Carlo should have really a lot of
instruments).

I did see Carlo's instrument displayed in the window, and the inlay work
was exquisite. In fact, he is in the next block where I am writing this
post. :-)
Thank you so much, I will go see Carlo next week. Last time I called him
via a translator he mentioned that his violins start at about U$1500 but
also said that a worthwhile violin will be at least $2000.

Her claim to fame is that she made a violin used by Itzak Perlman as well
as several professionals in the San Francisco Bay Area. I tried her violins
while in Italy in 1996. They have exceptional tone and power. She is
meticulous in her work - a graduate of the Cremona school of violin making.
If you can afford it (violin = $10k US, viola = $12k), it's a bargain at that
price for what you get.
She is originally from the US, so she speaks English.
