Hi,

May i know who is the best violin luthier, repair shop in the
SF bay area?

Ok, I know its a really stupid question for many reasons. There
are many great and qualified people who do violin work, and the
answer to the above question will be subjective among other things.

But I have a practical reason for asking. I am new to the bay area,
and got the names of several shops here.

My violin fingerboard needs replaning, and I want to take it to a
good and capable person. I am not comfortable taking it to the first
store that comes to mind since I have had people damage my instruments
before, and this particular violin is really precious to me.

Any recommendations? Any good experiences? Anybody greatly pleased with
the work of certain stores? For equivalent quality of work, anybody
consistently less expensive?

Thanks in advance.

-BAF

I've had very good experiences with Kamimoto strings in San Jose.

I also go to Kamimoto's, and can recommend them. They've always
treated me well, and have good staff in the repair shop. You should at
least talk to the guys in the shop about what you need, and then you
can decide if you feel comfortable with them. They are in San Jose.

There may be shops that are more convenient to you that are just as
good, depending on where you are. Kamimoto's is very convenient to me
so I've never looked beyond my back yard. If it counts for anything,
my violin teacher recommends Kamimoto's to all her students and has
her work done there... she has been teaching for about a million years
and played in the SJ symphony before that... and has a precious
instrument...

Roland Feller, in San Francisco, is renowned. I haven't had any
personal experience, but when there's a story in the paper on
violins - the Chicago Symphony outpacing their luggage and in need
of loaners, or on the David Guarneri that Heifetz bequeathed to
the city - Roland Feller is a name that gets mentioned often.
