I've been listening to some recordings of Miles Davis' last band. What has
me intruiged is the work of Foley McCleary playing lead bass. It sounds
just like a guitar to me but on a video I have, his intrument is definitely
a bass guitar. Does anyone know why he uses a 4-string bass instead of a
6-string guitar?

He was a bassist and began experimenting with piccolo tunings. He also plays
guitar, though (heard him play on a floppy record a few years ago) so not sure
why he doesn't just use the six string myself....
