Has anybody ever tried these Yorkville bass amps? I just tried a
combo200 watt with a 15" and it is incredible. I'm thinking about
selling my ampeg setup for a thousand and getting the yorkville for
500. Then I get justify getting a new bass :)

Am I just crazy? Please give me some thoughts.

Thanks
Devin

I own a used Yorkville Bloc 80 combo (80 watts, 15 inch speaker), and while
it is louder, its tone is not as warm or pleasing (to my ear) as the tone
produced by my Ampeg BA-112 combo (50 watts, 12 inch speaker).

I had a KMD brand combo amp that was made by Yorkville.
200 watts into a 4 ohm 15" speaker. There was also an extention
speaker jack.
I was amazed at how loud that amp could get. But the tone was harsh
with the treble or high mid turned past 1/4.

Yorkville also builds Traynor amps. They are a step up in quality.
I have one of the 70's tube bass amps and I love the tone it give me.

I have been using this amp for several months now in rehearsals. It
was an improvement on my previous setup, but still not perfect.

My setup includs an active/passive Godin SD4 (J and P pickup config).
My volume became louder, but my tone was not that great, even with the
"contour" button activated. Playing around with the volume, pumping
the bass, dropping the mids and the treble settings allowed me get a
bit more thumpy, but the speaker cuts out after I go beyond 8-9, even
with the limiter activated. Yeah, we play loud - I'm competing with a
loud drummer, and two guitar players going through a pair of Fender
twins playing roots blues and blues rock.

So, the 200W amp was cutting it for the most part, but lacking in
overall volume and clarity at the upper levels of the volume control,
even with the limiter and contour activated.

The solution? Sans Amp Bass DI/Preamp. You want HOLY CRAP, you got
HOLY CRAP!! My tone and volume with this setup is far beyond what the
bass and amp alone could accomplish. My bottom end just fattened up
like a $2 hooker. When I was researching this DI, I thought: "OK, 300
bucks for this and about $450 for the amp can buy me a decent tube
bass amp combo. But, where's the versatility - I'll still need a DI
for gigging (don't trust the line out on the Yorkville) and I'll still
need a stage monitor (amp). Hmmm, maybe I won't be so bad off adding a
small piece to my existing setup." That was a good call - my first
reheasal with the DI and the Yorkville really showed what the two can
do in unison. Read the reviews that I (and about 50 others)wrote at
http://www.harmony-central.com/Effects/Data/Tech_21/Bass_Driver_DI-01.html.

I can now run my amp at about 4-5 on the volume, flat on the EQ's with
the contour and limiter activated - I get much more volume due to the
preamp in the DI, I can shape my tone with more flexibility, there is
some compression that comes through the DI (but not too much) and I
now stand out from the rest of the band rather than getting drowned
out - all that with great fat tube emulated tone without distortion!!

Don't get me wrong, the Yorkville is a good and sturdy amp with great
potential with the right peripherals like the Sans Amp.

I use a Yorkville 2x10" combo with my 1966 Pbass for 15 years now. I love it. Big clean sound and it fits in my trunk. I plug in the 15" extension to get better mid range sound. Don't worry, you will be the guy they hear out in the parking lot!
