It seems to me that the way to go is to buy a MIDI controller keyboard
then go with software to produce and record the sound. I'm interested
in samples, not synthesis. Piano, horns, that kind of thing. I'm not
interesting in screwing around with the software, don't want anything
fancy. No sequencers. Just good sound and simple recording.

The controller is pretty much a matter of taste. What would you
recommend for software?

What sort of computer is needed? I have no computer so I could buy a
Mac if necessary.

Note that to use it, you need a keyboard that can use both an expression and
sustain pedal at the same time, and also supports aftertouch; so choose your
controller accordingly.

absolutely none... if you aren't going to sequence events
and build your music that way, you need a computer like you
need more tits

then buy the best sampling based keyboard you can afford...
the big Rolands even have expansion slots in 'em so you
can actually customize them with pre-loaded, professionally
done samples libraries in many genres... then buy the best digital
recording device you can afford (even the $200-300 ones
are great now, and the hard-disk usb ported ones are only
a couple-few hundred more... don't buy a keyboard with
the recorder built in though, or you'll be sequencing
whether you like it or not

and you are ready to go... make sound, record sound,
play it back, record more sound, etc. that's the simple way
it's always been done. Why did you think you needed a
computer?

who is gonna play the Drum's for you to record? or are
you gonna do that in real time from a keyboard too?
are you gonna record the drums first for the whole song
then play everything else in? you better be really good
if you're gonna do that

an analog drum track really locks you in

oh, you might want a computer to download your finished
recordings to then upload to u-tube or something, or
to burn CD's, though many inexpensive recorders like
the Zoom have a CD burner built in so hey, who needs
a computer

ciao

Wow! I had no idea such a thing existed. $200 seems like a real
deal. I'll go for both the classical and jazz packages and save my
Casio for rock :-)

So I must have a Mac? There could be worse fates.

The Steinway Pro package is amusingly "sold out." The Steinway on the
jazz library sounds excellent, good enough for me.

This should make for a lifetime of musical channel surfing. Certainly
it far exceeds my terminally limited competence.

Now if it only had a glass harmonica....
