Any suggestions on albums to get with Anthony Jackson on bass? Nothing to
strange, I'd like to hear him in a somewhat straight-ahead format.
Nothing remotely Rippington-esque or Yellowjacket-y.

Well, the man himself likes to talk about his work with Chaka Khan as
his best straight stuff. He did a couple of albums with her in the late
'70s. There's also Al diMeola, for a more old-fashioned fushion...

Check him out with Steve Khan and Dave Weckl in the Steve Khan trio.
Awesome stuff, especially live!

Don't have a discography handy, but I think you'll find him on a few
Shaka-Kahn (sp?) recordings. Also, if memory serves me right (it's let me
down a time or two before! :), I think he played on the Simon & Garfunkle
"Live at Centeral Park"...or was it "Concert in Centeral Park"....???
Also, he's been interviewed in Bass Player mag, so there's probably a
listing of his recording credits there. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

my favorite album with him is "Rendezvous" by Michel Camilo, with
Jackson and Weckl. also any of Weckl's solo stuff.

A little out on a limb, here, cause my old 33 1/3 don't have no notes, but
I think AJ is the bass player on Chaka Kahn's album 'Naughty', which, in
any case, is one of my fave funky/soul albums. It's worth checking the BP
discography since many of the reissues from the 70's (at least those I've
seen) are 'budget' affairs, and don't have complete liner notes or credits.

My suggestions would be as follows:

MICHAEL CAMILLO - "RENDEVOUS". Anthony in a piano-trio setting. Their
version of "Caravan" is particularly revealing of Anthony's artistry.

AL DI MEOLA - "TOUR DE FORCE". Hearing the perfection of Anthony's
execution in a live situation on difficult music is thrilling. Also, check
out the muted tumbao on "Elegant Gypsy".

Hearing Anthony in any Latin-style jazz is worth the price of
admission. Al Di Meola's "Kiss My Axe" is also good, although Anthony does
not appear on every track. The same is true of Arturo Sandoval's recording
which I think is called "Flight to Freedom", or something like that.

I doubt that you'd find any of these too "far out".

Hope I've helped.

>can you suggest any Anthony Jackson recordings?

I like his work with Steve Khan + Eyewitness. The live one is good,
called "Blades" but also called "Live in Japan" or something. He's great,
with drummer Steve Jordan on a couple others, "Casa Loco" and the
self-titled debut.

MY favorite Anthony record is the very first Eyewitness album, called
Eyewitness. You might find it a bit mellow, but it's got TWO count 'em
TWO bass SOLOS from the man who don't do 'em, ya know? EXTRA ADDED
BONUS--STEVE JORDAN. For my money, no rhythm section in
electric-instrumental music grooves like they do (poss. exception Jaco
and The WR drummers). All the Michel Camilo albums are great, but the
first one, the name of which escapes me, has been my favorite thus far.

The O'Jays greatest hits. "For The Love Of Money" has the funkiest
pick-and-flange sound you'll hear anywhere. Hot damn!

The first two, hard-to-find, pre-major-record-deal Camilo albums are:

- Why Not!
- Suntan

...on ProJazz.

They feature AJ on bass in a trio setting with Michel and drummers Dave
Weckl and Joel Rosenblatt. My first exposure outside DiMeola's solo albums
to Anthony - sick, sick, sick!

The first time I saw Anthony Jackson's name on an album was in the
mid 70's on Michael Urbaniak's Fusion debut album. His tone was very
striking.

Has anyone ever heard AJ play a bass solo, live or on record? Just
curious.
