I am interested in unusual stringed instruments in the low-frequency range.
For example, I have a catalog from Lark in the Morning (weird instruments from
around the world) and it lists two Mexican instruments, a Guitarrone (a big
guitarish thing which is basically a 6-string guitar tuned an octave lower)
and a Bajo Sexto (like a twelve-stringed guitar tuned an octave lower,
but has a longer neck than the guitarrone, a cutaway, and is less "chunky".)
Does anyone else know of any weird basses, or where I could get some?

You may be thinking of the Guild Ashbory, which was indeed a bizarre
electric bass instrument with synthetic (rubbery) strings. It was also
shaped oddly, sort of a plank rather than a guitar shape (rather like a
Chapman stick, another unusual stringed instrument which covers the
bass range).

A couple of interesting instruments I haven't yet seen mentioned here
are the Theorbo, or bass lute , and the Bass Balalaika. There are
only a couple of Lute recordings with them and, I gather only a
couple of them extant, but the Theorbo has a ringing, lush tone.
Bass Balalaika shows up in lots of those russsian
folk music groups of assorted sizes. Its sound is kind of dull,
like a plywood bass- could have been the recordings, could have been plywood
instruments...Anyway, go look for Theorbos in groups...It'll take
some digging, but it's worth it.

I'm pretty sure it was Guild.

Guild it was. The Asbury or Ashbury bass. Used these blue silicone rubber strings.
Tiny, and sounded more like an upright than anything other than an upright. I
coulda bought one for $250...and should have.
