Any thoughts?

Sure. My thoughts are that strings are a matter of taste both in the
playing feel and in the sound you get so it's not really practical for
a third person to make that decision for someone else. In the end what
has to be done is to try them all and see which ones your son likes
the best. Bass strings don't last forever so eventually you can cycle
through a number of them. Double ball end strings don't come in a lot
of variety anyway.
My choice for the "first" string set would be normal weight strings of
some type. My personal favorite brand is D'Addario, but Rotosounds are
good too though probably a bit brighter. I'm sure Steinberger normals
are a good choice too. Just try to start out with what is common and
popular first and then decide which way to move from there. Obsessing
about strings without trying them won't get you anywhere.
