I spoke with Jim Rawson of Long Island Bagpipes today about those very
pipes. He has an inventory of Kintail to sell off because he wants rid of
them. He will no longer carry anything from Kintail. However, as he will
tell you, they make good "beginner" pipes and what he's selling is in tip
top shape. I do most of my business with him and he's one of the most
reputable in the business.
So, if you want to get Kintails for the budding beginner, that's fine.
However, if there are some really promising players in your group, go for
some of the better stuff he sells. I don't want to get into a p***ing match
with anyone on the NG, so I won't bring up the names he does deal in. Rest
assured, however, that besides the Kintail pipes he's selling cheaply, he
also has some top-shelf stuff and backs his stuff up with stellar customer
service.

I'd like to put an addendum on that, because the "Kintail" line itself
is not a great sounding set of drones, or at least very hit-and-miss,
but if you can get them cheaply, they are nice looking, pretty well
made and probably the best striped ebony you'll ever see. (No, I'm not
entirely joking.) If this dealer has any of the Glen reproductions
however, and you can get them at closeout rates, buy them all up
first. Skip the Kintails and Drumrans. The Glens are a damned fine
sounding drone, and I think the quality is as good or better on that
line than the others. All these lines are manufactured by Greig Sharp
and Co, and are off the same lathes by the same makers, the big
difference is the Glen line at least *was* something of a show-off
model and was fairly truely copied from a set of classic Glens,
whereas, I don't really know what went awry in the Drumran or Kintail
designs, but they don't put out much tone for the effort.
