Okay, there is Naill, Shepherd, Hardie, MacLeod, Gillander&MacLeod, and
Sinclair have all been going in the UK for a while. Henderson, Lawrie, Glen,
Grainger & Campbell, MacDougal, Starck, Tweedie, and Robertson are no longer
in production. In the US and Canada there is Gibson, Kron, Dunbar, Cushing,
and MacLellan who have been around for a wee while. Who are all of the up and
coming makers? I've heard of McCallum, Dunfion, Booth, MacMurchie, Fletcher,
Pettigrew, Alan Logan, Peter Crisler, ROS, Hamish Moore, MacHarg, Gordon
Mooney, Kilmarnock, Clan, Sharp& Co., Kilberry, Piob Mhor, and Bagpipes
Galore. Is that all of them? Who have I left out (old or new)? Who are the
hot ones? What should one look for? If this starts an argument could you
change the subject heading, please? Thanks, Rob

Just to throw a bit of confusion into this some of the modern names you
mention are owned by single companies who market under different names.
Sharp also trades as Kintail, David Glen, J & R Glen, and Drumran. Joe
Hagan of Clan bagpipes (a former employee of J & R Glen when it was
owned by Andrew Ross in the Royal Mile) now owns and markets the
Grainger and Campbell name.

So many new manufacturers. Add one more to the list. Colin Wistanley, maker
of The Universal Blowstick. Anyone else know of an obscure pipe maker?

Anyone heard of Bernie Leigh? He lives in Warrington, near Liverpool,
N.W.England. He doesn't actually make pipes from new, but he runs a thriving
business in refurbishing pipes, and mounting pipes and chanters with sterling
silver in several of his own unique designs. I had a set mounted by him some
years ago and I was delighted with the results. Prices are VERY competitive
compared to High Street shops. Like Colin Winstanley, he works from home and is
a dedicated craftsman. He is also the UK agent for Gibson UK pipe chanters.

I can give you contact details if required.

(Over here, Colin is not regarded as "obscure". There is a large number of
competing pipers using his Universal Blowstick).

Actually, that's not true . . . he put Hamish Moore on there, who makes
smallpipes, border pipes, and Highland pipes in A (not our usual almost-
B-flat).

But I for one would welcome seeing such a list . . . if you've got it!

Ray Hughes of Lubbock, Texas is anew pipe maker and he makes vveery good
pipes. The address above is his website. His pipes look good and sound
good. They tune to our bands mix of pipes without any trouble (usually they
are in better tune than the rreest of us). He gets positive comments on them
every where he goes. Ray also goes to several games each year and sells
his chanters aand pipes. He will be in Saalado, Tx this weeknd. His
practice chanters have excellent tone for practice chanters. Ray is also a
competetion piper, playing a set of his stag horn crowned pipes. He is also
one of the bands pipe sargents.

Oh man, I wish I'd seen this guy before. I love cocobolo and to have some
pipes made in cocobolo would have been a drean come true. Those ceilidh
pipes look nice. (All practice chanter reeds, interesting)
