Greetings,

I am a GHB/SSP/whistle player living in Santa Cruz who, after hearing a
few too many recordings of Davy Spillane and Paddy Keenan, is considering
taking up the uilleann pipes. I recently heard about a pipemaker in
Newfoundland named Neil O'Grady who supposedly makes high-quality sets of
pipes for extremely reasonable prices. Apparently, practice sets made
from brass-mounted cocobolo with a leather bag only cost $600 CAN. That
just sounds too good to be true ! My Highland pipe instructor (the highly
reputable Jay Salter) tells me that it's very unlikely to find good
quality practice sets for under $1,000 US.

Have any uilleann pipers out there heard much about these pipes or ever
had any positive/negative expieriences playing them. Are they really worth
it or are they just a waste of time and money??? If they are good quality
pipes, then does anyone know the prices for his half sets as well? Any
helpful comments would be greatly appreciated.

Slainte,

Channing Dodson

Channing:

I don't know anything about Neil O'Grady's work but...
The highest quality uilleann practice sets are indeed available for under
$1,000 US. Kirk Lynch, who is located just outside Kansas City, Missouri,
produces practice sets for around $750-800. Jerry O'Sullivan has begun
playing a Lynch chanter and has ordered a full set. Kirk's prices are in
the $1500 range for a half set and $3700 for a full set. He is a craftsman
of the highest order. I have a half set made by Lynch as well as a 1970s
vintage Matt Kiernan full set, and I love my Lynch hafl set. Call him at
816.386.2163. He has a backlog, so you might have to wait 6 months or so,
but they are well worth the wait.

I've heard of O'Grady. Pipes are supposed to be pretty good. I have two
sets. One made by B.C. Childress (bcp...@tiac.net) of Gardner, MA. A
very sweet sounding chanter of rosewood. My other set is from Kirk Lynch
of Weston, MO. A more powerful chanter. Keep in touch!
