Does anyone out there know of a source of mammoth ivory, I am pretty
desparate to get hold of some to refurbish parts of my pipes and if the
price was right I may purchase enough to have a set of mounts made.

I really need a piece that is at the tusk end of the beast, as the most
important part I want to make is for a mouthpiece.

I remember there was a website out there with photographs of masses of the
stuff, I think it may have been something to do with a Swedish maker who was
using the stuff, the pages may have been Bill Carr's.... any offers Bill??

I hope somebody can help and point me in the right direction??

Cheers

John, his name is Bill Carr and lives in Norway. He has what
your looking for. I'm not sure of his web sight, but I know that
he does have one. I believe it's Bill's Classified. If I should
find it I'll shoot it over to you.

John, find a link for Rolf Litorin on my site. I think he did some work for
Bill. From my information, mammoth tusk is readily available, but expensive
as all hell. I ran into a full 8 foot tusk in LA a few weeks back. They
wanted $20,000 for it. Had a smaller one for $15,000.

Mark Cushing (an excerpt from his web page on repairs is provided below )
also can remake Mammoth Ivory fixtures but it is on the expensive side. I
like the elk antler better, it has more 'character'. The only difference
that I could see when i visited his shop recently was the grain patter
between the regular and mastadon ivory was slightly different in the samples
he had. The intersection of lines in the grain is at a sharper angle in the
mammoth ivory compared to the regular elephant. It is nearly identical
looking reallly unless you know that difference.

(the following is from the Cushing web page at:
http://www.lightlink.com/mcushing/ ) I can personally vouch for the
beautiful work he does. The only warning is he is VERY busy and has a few
months backlog of work as it as (don't ask until he finishes my new PC ;)

Refinishing:

Make your pipes look reborn! Cost depends on condition of the pipes.
Typically it can cost from $100 - $200 including stripping and prepping your
pipes. We use our catalyzed varnish which is the ultimate in a durable,
waterproof wood finish.

Repairs:

We do all sorts of repairs to your new or antique instruments. This
includes: refinishing; crack pinning, retrofitting of brass lining in your
original blowpipe; Building new replacement parts to match you original
instrument's internal and external dimensions; Making new mounts to match
your old in Imitation or real ivory, Customization of blowpipes, bags or
stocks, etc.etc. Call us with your needs.

Projecting mounts installed on your pipes:

set of imitation ivory mounts [to our pattern] $15 each x 8 $120.00

set of Elk Antler Projecting mounts $42.50 each x 8 $500.00

Ivory mounts: elephant or Mastodon/mammoth [call for current price and
availability] approx. $720.00

Typical installation costs for of 8 pieces: [this may vary with your pipes]
$20 each x 8 $160.00

Feasibility must be determined first, as different makers have adopted
various ways of attaching projecting mounts, not to mention differing
internal and external dimensions.

Mitch
