As the main purpose of this NEWSGROUP is the exchange and discussion of ideas
and opinions, I would like to pose a few questions.

· For those who play Piobaireachd. What are your favourite Piobaireachd to
play?
· For those who do not play. Which are your favourite (Pio) tunes?
· And finally, for those who do not enjoy Piobaireachd. Which tunes do you
hate the least?

Anyway, I hope this string spawns some debate.

Cheers,
Keith McGrath

I've made a conscious decision to keep away from learning too many piobaireachd
until I am in a position to afford a worthwhile teacher. In the meantime, I'm
listening and learning. Of the couple I play, I like Glengarry's Lament for it's
simple beauty, and the Little Spree (or the Wee Spree, as most round here call
it).

Of the tunes I don't play (yet), Donald Duaghal MacKay, MacCrimmons Sweetheart,
Lament for Donald Ban, the Children, the Blind Piper's Obstinancy, and the
Vaunting. There are a couple more that I can't remember names of. The usual
suspects, I know, but then they're the usual suspects for good reasons.

I have played a dozen or so and have studied/listened to many more. Among
the easier tunes, I like MacDonald of Kinlochmoidart's Lament No.1 the most.
Medium weight tunes: Lament for Mary MacLeod and MacCrimmon's Sweetheart.
Some may argue that the latter is actually a difficult-level tune and I
would offer little debate. But I believe both are in the running for most
beautiful Piobaireachd ever written. Among the real big tunes: Lament for
Donald Duaghal MacKay, Park Piobaireachd No. 2, and Old Men of the Shells.

A walk on the esoteric side for this NG...thanks for the post.

Cheers,
Chris Jones

I am playing Piobaireachd for my second year.

I have McIntosh's Lament; Glengarry's Lament;
The Wee Spree; The Munro's Salute; Clan Campbell's
Gathering; The MacGregor's; and am currently
memorizing Salute to Donald. The Desperate Battle
is next on my list, because I love the sound of it.

I am fortunate to have a fine teacher.

Christine

I favour some of the less well known piobaireachds. I play MacLeod's
Controversy, a Flame of Wrath for Patrick Caogach, the Blind Piper's
Obstinacy (a hard one to memorise), the Men Went to Drink, Clan Ranald's
Gathering to the Battle of Sherrifmuir in 1715 (this is one of the few real
gathering piobaireachds. From the taorluath to the crunluath a mach almost
every theme note is B. You just hammer away on B for a long time to really
great effect), MacNeill is Lord There, and the Inverness Piobaireachd (in
William Ross's Collection). I'm debating which piobaireachd to learn next.
Maybe Weighing From Land or Clan Campbell's Gathering or the Old Men of the
Shells or Lament for Mary MacLeod.

My favorite piobaireachd, after one year on the pipes:

Company's Lament
Lament for Allisdair Dearg MacDonnell of Glengarry
McKintosh's Banner
MacFarlane's Gathering (even though it is really about stealing cows)

Pieces I don't play yet (but maybe one day, who knows)

Bells of Perth (when done right, it is awesome)
The piece played by John Hunt Leigh in the BBC Documentary Culloden
(this is the piece that started it all for me some 30 years ago--and I
still haven't found the name of it)
