I passed the inquiry about instrument insurance on to my brother-in-law in
Detroit, who is a professional jazz keyboard player. Here's his reply:

>> If the friend is a musician's union member, she could get a
>> deal through Albert Wohl Insurance company. They specialize
>> in this type of insurance. I don't know what they offer
>> non-union people, but I suspect they probably have such a
>> program. I have contact info at home, which I will
>> forward..

I'll post the contact info when it comes.

Cheers,

In the states, instruments should be covered as part of a home owner's
policy, which includes renter's insurance. This means that the instrument
would be covered in the event that it got stolen. Even if items of value
are stolen from your automobile, it is not covered by auto insurance but by
homeowner's insurance. Other then theft which is covered by homeowner's
insurance, I don't know of any other cause of loss which would be covered.
For example, normal wear and tear would not be covered.

While I am not familiar with this Albert Wohl program, I thought I would
post this for the piper who might just be wondering if his/her pipes would
be covered in the event of theft. If this is all you are worried about, it
should not be neccessary for you to join a musician's union just to get
coverage. (Although there are probably other reasons to join.) But better
yet, call your broker or agent and ask them. If your pipe are worth a
particularly large amount of money, ask your broker/agent if you should get
them appraised.

Cheers,
Martin

Called my agent and he stated that if you make any money at all, even as a
hobby, with your instruments, they need a seperate policy or rider. Standard
homeowners or renters insurance will cover such instruments but for a fraction
of replacement value.
