I'm very excited about this weekend's JVC Newport Jazz Festival, which
probably has the best lineup it's had in decades (it's the 50th
anniversary). There are three stages Saturday and Sunday, with
continuous performances on each. Plenty of obvious choices, mainly on
the JVC Jazz main stage (Wynton, Branford, Brubeck, Hancock, Ornette,
etc.), but does anyone have suggestions for "hidden gems"?

Today's Boston Globe has a nice feature on Roswell Rudd, who'll be
performing with Dave Douglas' Vacation Blues on Sunday in a tribute to
Herbie Nichols. That's on the second stage (the, ahem, Dunkin' Donuts
Stage). A must-see show, it seems to me. (The third stage is the
Sirius Piano Stage.) Any other sets that shouldn't be missed?

I thought Ravi Coltrane, although way late for his slot, was well
worth the wait. All-around tight group, with the drummer standing
out.

Oh my. I hope they're managing to produce a cd (or two) of that!
