Johnny & the Hurricanes were OK, but I don't think they played surf
music. There will always be borderline cases in deciding who is "in"
and who is "not in" a musical genre, but I think it's generally accepted
that to be considered surf music a recording needs at least one of the
following: (1) reference to surfing or beaches in the title (or lyrics,
for vocal surf music); (2) small combo (guitars-bass-drums, possibly sax
or electric piano) with melody lead played on guitar; (3) reverb on
lead or rhythm guitar; (4) recorded by a Southern California band that
was part of the original surf culture 1960-65. I don't think J&H
qualify on any of these scores. Instrumental surf is not co-extensive with
instrumental rock and roll, but is a subcategory.

other hand, they used to cover Billy Vaughn too :-)
