Some information has been stolen from _Goldmine_ Issue 306.
According to the rumor mill Sub Pop almost entered a distribution agreement
with CBS (before the Sony buyout.) They were relying on this deal to cover
a major amount of the debt they had accrued to this point, and when the deal
fell through they were left owing money to a vinyl pressing plant in
California. This plant has recently started re-issuing collector-colored
vinyl of Sub Pop classics such as Mudhoney's "Superfuzz Bigmuff" and
Nirvana's "Bleach" in an attempt to recover some of the money Sub Pop owes
them. Currently, all cassettes and CDs are manufactured by Caroline
Distribution, who is their exclusive distributor. These, along with some
vinyl, are also sold directly by Sub Pop.
In vinyl color descriptions, "w/ws" means "with white swirls". This is more
commonly known as "marbled". Most second or later generations of colored
vinyl pressings were done with black, so color information is only valid
for first pressings. Black vinyl releases aren't always noted.
Some older titles are now available on CD. This is indicated in the catalog
numbers by appending an "a" for cassettes or "b" for CDs. The entries will
continue to be made under the usual catalog number, i.e. SP57 but additional
entries will be made when the track listings differ from the vinyl release.
Starting with the March 1993 edition, catalog numbers have changed to
the following format: NNN-X where NNN is the former SPNNN number, and X
stands for the format. Formats are: 1 - LP, 2 - CD/CD single, 4 - cassette,
7 - 7" record. The format of the discography will remain the same to keep
things simple.
