Well do you ever goto the Mercury? Actually Hana Solo mentions me when
I get some music for her to play in her play lists.. I'm almost always
at the Merc on friday and saturday and dance a bit (though not so much
lately... :( )
Ok let me comment here :)

That would be "When You're Evil."
I find it to be a rather amusing tongue-in-cheek poke at goths.
What exactly makes you "HATE HATE HATE" it so much?

hehe..well i did a few years ago..and thats where all my
awareness began....i only lasted a couple months though..it
really got to me,and alot of drama and all that...thats where
you find out who your REAL friends are..
i actually must say though i can respect and commend anyone who
does open a club and sticks it out..its really hard work, and it
has to be your main focus if thats what you are doing..for me it
was not..my label,radio shows,distro,radio promotions,and band
were more important for me....and still are..and i'm glad i made
my choice...its kept my sanity at least a bit longer.

I think that song is cute. Voltaire is reprehensibly untalented (see the
comic abomination "Oh My Goth"), but that track makes me think of
something an evil disney character would sing. And that's all good.
Sleep3k
"Like a Prayer"-BiGod20
"Headhunter"-Front 242
"Another World"-Beborn Beton (I like it but enough already)
Most of the Sisters of Mercy catalogue, especially "Temple of Love"
"Tainted Love"-Soft Cell
Bauhaus-"Bela Lugosi's Dead"
"Ausoween"-the Kurt Harland thingy-this has gotten played to the point that a
lot of people don't realize that "Ich Bin Ein Auslander" is a separate entity
"The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove"-DCD did nine major releases and yet the idiot DJ
plays this every week
And various horrible reminders of the 80s. At least the club that committed
these crimes of redundancy (well one of the DJs anyway) has recently burned
down. No one was hurt, so I shed no tears. :P

Apotheosis "O Fortuna"
Velvet Acid Christ "Fun With Drugs" (I'm partly responsible for killing
this one. I stopped playing it in my sets 7 months or so ago. Someone else
picked up the torch...)

One of the Newer Wave comps has the only Hate Dept. song I care for - "Planet
Earth." But yeah, in general, I think they were pretty well done.
>Just no more fucking covers of Tainted Love, OK?
Oh, c'mon. Don't you like Coil?
Oh, c'mon, Mina. Its chock full of synthy goodness.
I dunno. I don't club often, so I don't hear this song, oh, ever. When I do,
maybe once every 8 months or so, I bob my head. I think its catchy.
Yeah, I'd like to know what clubs are overplaying "Feurio" and
"Headcleaner." Certainly no club I've been lucky enough to go to.

Which one? I used to go to Smart Bar, but now
it SUCKS!!!!. Neo's isn't that much better either.
I'm going to check out Morseland on Saturday; it's
supposed to be ebm, electro, pn, & goth (ICK)
Judging from the Noisex show, it looks like it will
be pretty good. I just hope that Scary Lady Sara
and her legions stay the hell away with their crap
music, because it's been waaayyy too long since
Chicago has had a decent industrial night.

He is way fun to see live. Anyway, while he plays next to nothing on
guitar, the rest of his band are fairly talented. Plus, how many other
shows can I go to and laugh my ass of at.

Stop playing 'once in a lifetime' DAMNIT!
I agree with most of what you mentioned but I would also add
Mesh: Trust You
Statemachine: Thermal noise
FLA: Plasticity
The funny thing is, being on both sides of the pond, NYC and London overplay
the exact same songs.
Haha. I was thinking "what a coincidence - I live near a crappy club that just
burned down!" before I got to the bottom of your post and saw your name. :)
I shed no tears either. However, I'm sure the DJs and fans will continue
listening to their 80's pop music (which they often refer to as "underground"
and "industrial") at whatever temporary venue they set up.

CYBERAGE RADIO WORLDWIDE-----<www.cyberage.cx>------
Well then I guess you were there... lol.. let me guess.. are you a
little girl with short dark hair and dance fairly wild?
Mark
I have went a couple times. The first time I went, it was pretty good..
I danced to a few songs.. and the second time wasn't so good... the
last time... was just dead... I talked to Heather briefly.. she razzing
me a little cuz I couldn't get into the Merc cuz I couldnt' find my
wallet... I did go home and find it (after tearing up my apartment)..
but yeah I'll come in again next week, and try to get there earlier.. I
got there at about 11 on sunday..
M
Actually I haven't liked the change so much.. been dancing alot less..
I think that's a sign of old age.. when you stop at a certain music era
and can't listen to any thing new.. like those old fuckers who listen
to Barry Manalow.. or those who can't realize that the members of KISS
are like 90 now.. ha ha.. I do like some of the newer stuff like Din
Fiv..and Flugslied (sp?) but you may also account the slide in "head
count" to Summertime.. I've always seen that happen no matter what
clubs I've been to, and I've seen my fair share.
Hey is this the Genn I think it is?
Mark
Woohoo... yeah.. Hana can give me the finger... My list mostly consists
of songs that I heard when I first started clubbing way back in
the "olden days" (haha).. My real gripe is that there is so much more
good stuff out there since what happened back in 1989... or 1993!
I think there should be another list that is:
"Don't play this song so damn much, else it will get on the other
list!" :)
Cool... I used to club in CA... in 93-94 in San Fran.. and 94-95 in San
Diego (but I only went to Club Therapy).. then 96-00 up here in Seattle.
gawd I'm old.. :(
Personally I was never too impressed with either album. I had both of
them... I've seen 242 live too but Front by Front was the only one I
really liked..
M
Mark
I'm a DJ wanna be... I got to play a few times at the Merc..
Sounds like you play a more Techno like music.. like Crystal Method and
Juno Reactor.. and Prodigy! ACK... the Catwalk used to play CM and
Prodigy all the time. Hana plays Juno.. and I just wanna walk out..
Covanent is overplayed.. but not anywhere in the league of the list so
far.. my suggestion is to play some of the other songs on the CD that
are good.. like One World One Sky (hey I like it).. or something like
that..
Good plan on those songs you really don't want to play... KMFDM does
get a bit overplayed here.. but not MDFMK.. :) Trust me, I love both
bands so it took alot of times of them being played to be put on my
list.. and Meglomanic reminds me of my thieving ex-roommate, who I'd
smash if I ever see again.. so I've never really liked that one.
I posted this list just to get this kind of reaction.. I enjoy the
input and your opinions...
thanks
Actually I believe I did ask.. lol.. I needed those 2 cents.. they were
an amusing 2 cents... thank you...

Course from what I heard.. Andrew Eldritch claimed they were never a

heavy metal band.

Danke.. thanks for reminding me.. "Right Here, Right Now" needs to be
on that list.

Yeah Scary huh?
I also think I'll add "LoveCats" by the Cure, but I think the most
might just say "Anything by the Cure"
Actually I think Fun with Drugs is played way too much.. I like Never
Worship, Decypher.. Fun With Knives... how come they don't get any
play...?
M
PS Lastly... a song I never want to fucking hear ANYWHERE, EVER AGAIN
is.........................
Village People "YMCA"
please let this fucking song die already... PLEASE!!!!!!!!
At least you had a roommate that listens to KMFDM. Have you ever had a
roommate that listens to booty rap all day long?
I like a lot of the songs mentioned in this thread but I agree that they
get overplayed. IMO that electronica bullshit (chemical brothers,
crystal method, prodigy, underworld's cowgirl, etc) gets played way too
much and should never be played in an industrial club. Or is this just
a Seattle/Vancouver thing?
Matthew
I wasn't aware they played that in clubs. I just see Tension and Riot. Wind
Of The North is probably my fav. song off that album, aside from Wall Of Sound.
>Mesh: Trust You
I think "Someone To Believe In" would be a good club track.
I haven't been to the catwalk in over a year. Did they stop playing that
techno crap? I might just have to check it out again.

Yeah...I wish Wall of Sound would get more club play...wonder why it doesn't...it's
not like it's not dancy.
Its long and monotonous. The actual content of the song is in the alternating
vocals. Its too subtle and texture-based.

That doesn't stop them from playing solitary in clubs...
Solitary has a prominant melody and melodic vocals. Wall Of Sound, in that
sense, is the worst song I've ever heard Covenant do. Its the stuff below the
surface that makes it good.

It has the prettiest string melody of any covenant song...actually, possibly the
only string melody in any covenant song.

Nah, it goes beyond that. People are just fucking weird. I just opened
up a night in Sacramento that is industrial only. I played Assemblage 23,
whom likely only a handful of people in our "Sisters n' FLA" town know.
Got a mediocre response and had a few ask about it. Got requests at the
next club event for said song. Played said song during the main set and
cleared the floor with it. Where were the people who requested it? At
the bar. Standing there. It's frustrating and VERY hard to not play the
"hits". I managed to get some "non-single" VNV Nation stuff over pretty
easily but anything weird (and by weird we're talking FUNKER VOGT even) is
really hard to get over with the crowd here.
I always open my first set with powernoise because *I* selfishly like to
listen to it LOUD and if the early arrivers don't like it they can drink
or whatever. Haven't had any problems yet. The best is when someone
requested "harsh industrial" during my co-DJ's set and she played Suicide
Commando and Synapscape and people went *outside*. And, of course, the
people who requested hard stuff didn't dance. Oh well.
For some reason I've found it much easier to get non-mainstream electro
and powernoise over with the radio listeners (I also DJ on the radio) than
in a live DJ setting.
We had a Noisex/Sonar show back when they toured and a large chunk of the
crowd was composed of folk from SF who came up to see the show (the SF
show had a sound system die) and I got to DJ. Of course, I got harrassed
by the people who booked the show for DJing things like Monolith, Somatic
Responses and P.A.L because you "can't dance to it". Whatever.
I try my best to educate the listener be it a radio listener or a club
goer but I also have to worry about meeting my guarantee and getting
repeat customers. I'm not sure how my list would rank with the "I never
want to hear X song again" thread but I try to mix in some lesser known
(at least amongst people here who are spoonfed Tin Omen by the local
"alternative" corporate station sponsored club night) stuff at the same
time.
I think it's time to move to Seattle or something... that place appears to
rock the spot as I've been hearing lately.

I'm surprised the patrons aren't all dancing to orchestral music.

Ha ha.. you got a point but I put a restriction on this... "overplayed"
to me means it's been around a long time and I still hear it every week.
So at least in Seattle "Sparrows and the Nightengales" doesn't go on
the list. (my list anyway)
And Cubanate hardly ever gets played here.. so even when I hear "Body
Burn" I get excited... It's an oldie.. but it's been soooo long since
I've heard them....

You think that's bad? Philadelphia is supposed to be great for
industrial. Unfortunately, the competition that's begun for a
head count between the now 3 clubs has taken its toll.. I don't
go out at all as much as I used to, but things have changed.
These days, if I go out, after the first hour they don't play
anything remotely close to what I want to hear. No risks are
taken anymore, and every time I request something (like stuff
from
the Virion Sequences comp for example), I get told "I don't want
to kill the dancefloor!"
Recently Flesh Field were staying with me here, and we
dragged Mr. Shear with us to Evolution on a sunday night. After
an hour's set of 80's, the dancefloor was turned into a mosh-pit
as the DJ spun 12 songs of Metal. He played everything from
rammstein to type o negative. The metal set did pause
momentarily
to play "Once in a lifetime" by Wolfsheim, but then quickly went
back to metal. The kids ate the stuff up, and I guess that's
what's keeping club afloat, but trust me- be thankfull that they
are at least playing electronics.
oh, and ben, thanks for the Baboon Torture Division Cd, this
rocks!

Ah okay... then I would definitely say "front by front" is probably the best
242 album for you as it's definitely their most accessible. Although, if you
don't mind the dated sound, you might dig 'Back Catalogue' too, as it has some
of their more 'synth poppy' material for lack of a better term...

I don't think it has to do with old age. The older I get the more

True head count always goes down in the summer, but JQ's head count is
way more than Hana's, which is probably why she catered more to "the
crowd" last week. The whole point is to keep people dancing and
buying drinks and last week more people danced. People have bben
complaining about how repetitive Power noise is and then I watch them
dance to 'Dead Stars' or 'Kindertraum' or something and IMO that is
just as repetitive. I think it's great that Hana is playing different
types of music...you know a little bit of something for everyone...

yeah, he has a comic book series called Chi-Chian, which was also made
into a small claymation series that i know has been played on SciFi,
and probably MTV when they had those late-night cartoon thingies. and
while im not particularly fond of his music, he is definitely a cool
guy...only time ive seen him was at GothCon in Atlanta this past year,
and he was really laid back and was happy to sign my girlfriend's Chi
Chian comic books. someone referred to him as 'untalented', and
while his music is annoying (IMO), the comics are pretty cool. i know
i sure as hell cant make music nor write comics. ;)

i grew up in s.florida, so i think its in my blood to like booty
rap...at least the stuff when i was like 12 and that was the only
music i had access to. the point of this follow-up being that a good
friend of mine just moved back into town, and he works at a MediaPlay
store and told me that theres an album called Basskraft - A Bass
Tribute to Kraftwerk...maybe one of us will buy it and review it on
here someday. hehe.

yes...this is typical behaviour everywhere as i think the core
RMI'ers have all helped us figure out...at one point i thought
New Mexico ,where i live was just so behind the rest..but i see
its the same everywhere basically, and i think that its been
cool hearing everyone different ,yet the same experiences all
over the world...its funny how sheep are really sheep...i don't
just use the word loosely...its very accurate and on target.
now we must make change!revolution time again...woooo hoo!

same deal here....its all competition because too many trnedies
wanna "play d.j" and get laid and try to get popular with the
other insecure dorks who NEEED to go to the clubs all the time
to be accepted and feel alive..and they call themselves
individuals>>hahahahha...thats sheep if you ask me..and the d.js
are weak...
i'm just the opposite..someone asks me for NIN,SISTERS and
Bauhaus and i'm like...."where do you want the cd?? lodged up
your ass>? or in your fucking ear?"

metal instead of aggressive electronic/industrial eh??
thats fucking retarded...but doesn't seem to surprise me
anymore..nothing..
as i said before the sheep are multiplying by the thousands
daily...pop culture, mtv, and all the commercial radio still has
more strength then any of us internet radio shows, indie
labels,distributors,anything...
more people in population, more stupid people..and we all know..
"stupid people shouldn't breed"...unfortunately thats what they
do most..cause they have nothing else to do but fuck, drink, and
fuck some more..and then beat their wife/husband and fight over
custordy....shit...i went off topic...damn.. people make me
do this often..anyhow..you get my point.

Seriously, though, I've heard "Headhunter" and "JUKE JOINT JEZEBEL" enough
times, too. But when you're DJing in a club, you don't really have a choice
to play the music YOU want to hear (unless it's early, and then all I wanna
do is throw some softer, trance-like stuff on [i.e. Intermix] and relax
before I spend 6 straight hours playing the normal stuff) because all the
patrons WANT to hear the same shit over and over and over and over and over
and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and
over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over
and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and
over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over
and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and
over...
You get the idea. My advice to all DJs is this: play the same shit over and
over again, because those few times you have the opportunity to play
something new people are going to start asking to hear that stuff over and
over again pretty soon. This is what happened when I started playing mdfmk
and Balligomingo, and now all the patrons love it. It's a cycle, and you'll
see it again and again.
Oh, and if anyone cares, I'll be DJing this Friday AND Saturday night.
