Yeah, it's true, folks. A German alternative music magazine had an
interview with the splatter movie director Joerg Buttgereit. He
mentioned that he also directed music videos - for instance a video
for the Krupps song "Rise Up". Juergen Engler told Buttgereit that he
wanted a video like the ones from Marilyn Manson.
Buttgereit took his inspiration from the "Beautiful People" video and
told that due to the limited funds he could do only a cheap version.
It was o.k. with Engler ...

There you have it. Die Krupps finally found another great industrial
band to take their ideas from (after Einstuerzende Neubauten, Nitzer
Ebb, Ministry and several others).

Most journalists-- especially music journalists-- take quotations out of
context to help "create" a story. I'd be interested to know the whole
story behind what happened.

I'm not sure I'd call Marilyn Manson a "great industrial band."

of course, that particular manson video was just one in a long series of videos
with that epileptic cutting, dirty, washed out look, dating back (i think) to
nin's closer. and the closer video's images were all directly inspired by some
photographer, whose name i can never remember.

I agree. In fact, I think "crappy industrial band" would do nicely.

Too bad Die Krupps was doing what EN was doing *at the same time* and
what Ebb were doing *before them*..

It's not the song off of odyssey of the mind...
it's a totally different cover of someone else's song...
The original was written by Sumner/Curtis/Morris/Hook... no idea.

Trent Reznor and the director of "Closer", Mark Romanek were inspired
mainly by the Brothers Quay while making "Closer". Also, they quote
Man Ray and Joel-Peter Witkin as inspirations for the aesthetic of the
video in question. But without doubt, the Brothers Quay were the
biggest influence (they also highly influenced Tool's epic videos).

I don't necessarily see Die Krupps as following in Marilyn Manson's
footsteps. The video direction of the Marilyn Manson video(s) (and of
David Bowie, Tricky, etc.) were created by a very talented young video
director by the name of Floria Sigismondi. For Die Krupps to find her
work inspirational isn't necessarily bad. Everyone, including the
forefathers of industrial music, have influences.

Given this, Die Krupps should have contacted Floria directly as she
probably would have directed for them, I'm sure, as she likes
underground music/films (from what I've read in interviews). Then
again, they might have tried and she was either busy or wanted too
much money. Regardless, I don't think they wanted their video to look
exactly like Marilyn Manson's, necessarily; rather, they wanted the
video to have the Floria Sigismondi "world of surreal" aesthetic.

films)

Well, to be honest, I was taking the quotations out of the context of a
Joerg Buttgereit story, so I'm the one who's to blame. I foound the
story about the video somewhat amusing and relevant to RMI, so I decided
to post an article about it.

I'm sure I wouldn't, it was meant to be a sarcastic comment.
After all it's another milestone in the downslide of this band.
In the beginning they had some reputable originals ...

And btw, I'm sorry for the misspelling in the subject header.
Guess I as too tired yesterday. :-)

If Die Krupps ripped Manson, it will seal the nail in the coffin for that
crappy band. Sad. Too bad it wouldn't kill off Manson. Yecch.

No one has responded to this that I can tell, so I'll bite. Those folks

Is it in "Paradise now"? I love the original "Isolation", and I wonder what
kind of version has Die Krupps done. (Please, no "it must be crap" answers,
unless you have already listened to it). About Die Krupps, I must say that I
really like "To The Hilt", which I consider one of my fave songs, but I
haven't found any other song of them as good as that one. I am not a huge
fan of the guitars in "Odyssey Of The Mind", and so I haven't considered
seriously to get "Paradise Now", as I've heard that it has even more
guitars. I'd wish I was wrong...

GAAAAAA! It's Joy Division! Bernard Sumner (AKA Albrecht or something
like that), Ian Curtis, Steven Morris, and Peter Hook. JOY FUCKIN'
DIVISION!

Psychic TV wrote a song for Ian Curtis after his suicide called IC
Water. (Wait a minute, if he doesn't know Joy Division, he sure as
hell won't know Psychic TV.)

Here's a news flash. That song NIN did on The Crow soundtrack? Joy
Division cover. Yup.

These dang kids today have no respect for their elders. :)

You know whats funny though. When I got "Odyssey...", I thought "Cool,
they're doing a Joy Division song!" I was disappointed to find out it
wasn't a cover. Then I buy the "Metalmorphosis..." compilation and it
actually IS the Joy Division song. Isn't that odd?

Kinda like when I rented "U2 Rattle & Hum" and read the song list on
the back. Silly me, I assumed that "Gloria" would be the U2 song.
Instead, it was a cover of The Doors song. (Or was that Van Morrison?
I get my Morrison's mixed up.)

I gotta go listen to "Decades" and give myself some nightmares. Geez,
I feel old. I can't believe these kids don't know Joy Division.
