just a thought...

i saw some sergio leone/clint eastwood films over break, which have some
samples in them. they are:

"you know what you are" - one of the last lines in The Good, the Bad and the
Ugly

laughing at beginning of "you know what you are" - fistful of dollars

"they've enlisted all the scum from both sides of the frontier...and they pay
in dollars" - from the Acid Horse single.

FYI, a lot of the samples in "NWO" are from "Apocalypse Now" -- which really
freaked me out. When I heard Martin Sheen yell, "It's alright! It's alright!"
it kind of put the song in a new perspective.

hmm....I was under the impression the the "I Can't hear You" came from Stripes....maybe I'm wrong...I don't know about the "You will not kill"

Most of the Quotes from FAITH COLLAPSING come from 1984.

Does anyone else have this almost inside hobby of finding where samples come from?

I've found VERY obscure films that Spuppy seems to drag stuff from...one was some demonic-prison-voodoo movie...I wish I had gotten the title. Thats in Hexonxonx

as for the sample wunderland of RIVERS...I got stuff from all over...Clockwork orange, 2001, The Fearless Vampire Killers..etc...

In the song Warlock (on Rabies) there are a number of samples of
your friend and mine, Charlie Manson (that doesn't sound right
for some reason, is my mind rotting? It is Charlie, or Charles,
isn't it?).

One of the lines is 'The pigs used to watch over the people, now
they're watching the people.' I can't remember the others, but
there are a number of them.

They're sampled out of some documentary about the Manson family,
which I don't remember the name of right now...

(Hmmm, I 'can't remember' quite a bit in this posting....not good.)

Oh yeah, another of the samples is 'Now is the only thing that's real.'

I think these lines are from Warlock, but I COULD be wrong about that
too. I know it's some S.P. song, and I think it's Warlock.

All right, enough blithering! I'm out of here------

You're right, you're right! :)

I think I have two other recordings with Charlie-boy on them... Die
Warzau's "Big Electric Metal Bass Face" and Negativland's "Helter
Stupid". The latter has one of the scariest samples I've ever heard...
goes something like this:

"Goddamn thing's a fucking act ... everything's an act, it's all an act.
The only thing that's not an act, the only thing that makes reality is
death. Then they hang it on a cross, kneel down to it, and pray to it.
That's the only reality they understand."

(Interestingly enough, they play a very Ogre-like screech under the
sample when he says "death".)

The 'dance motherfucker!' on Ministry's _you know what you are_ comes
from _Platoon_ there are other samples on LORH from that movie as well.
While sitting watching _Aliens_ the other night there were at least two
lines that Contagion used on _Contaminant PCB_ one was Col. Hicks immediately
after they'd just been clobbered in the first battle with the aliens Hicks
yells 'We're in some real pretty shit now, man!' I forget what the other was.
I also caught one KMFDM used in either 'money' or 'vogue' Something with
'fuck'in it. Also T99 used the line 'Get away from her, you bitch!' from the
last fight scene where the alien is trying to get Newt from under the floor.

That's actually Dennis Hopper.

Others - Crowforce use Colonel Kurtz dialog on 'White King', amongst a stack of
sample sources.

Not really a sample as such, but the quote on the back of the Ministry JBMHR t-
shirt - "No man with a good car needs to be justified" I remember hearing on
a film about fake evangelists - I think it was J Hustons "Wise Blood"

So is the intro to jbmhr a sample, i.e "Soon I discovered...." ?

On the topic of neat samples (ps: I never quote anything.. it's just a
hassle...) J.G.Thirwell samples Jim Jones profusely in his (aptly
titled) Jim Jones Mix of Lies by EMF (hey Foetus mixed it.. that's a
reason to buy it right? And Alex Patterson [apollo whatever] did the
other mix so I'm justified and defensive)... I believe the original
source tapes for that mix were put out by Temple Records.. but I may be
wrong..
PS: 'Hey poor you don't hafta be poor anymore, Jesus is here' sampled in
Welcome To Paradis and more recently Jericho (Prodigy)... where is this
from? Any ideas?

They're half of Throbbing Gristle. When that group broke up in 1981, it split
into two separate camps. Cosey Fanni Tutti and Chris Carter went off in one
direction, and Genesis P-Orridge and Sleazy Christopherson went in the other.
Chris and Cosey were the half that tended to do the dancier stuff, and
continued to do so thru several really wonderful solo albums. Gen and Sleazy
were the half that, uh...well, _Sleazy_ went on to join up with John Balance
in Coil, and Gen, well...errr...hmmm...[ponders how to describe just what
the _hell_ Genesis P-Orridge was/is up to]...Gen went on to do a variety
of interesting things, ranging from OTO-inspired dirge noise, to cover
versions of Beach Boys tunes [no, not a very adequate explanation...left out
the parts about self-indulgent behavior, self-mutilation, and police raids,
not to mention pretending he's a dozen or so different acts on rave
"compilations" that are really just Psychic TV albums, and so on, and so on,

Hope that helps...

Luckily there are a couple of places to see this stuff here in

And lo, ke...@andrew.cmu.edu (Kenny Eng) spake unto the masses saying:

Although a brief summary has already been posted, I'll put in my 0.02 ecu
anyway...

Chris and Cosey are a duo of Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti (born
Christine Newby or Christine Carroll, depending on who you ask). Members of
the first industrial group to be referred to as such, namely Throbbing
Gristle. As has already been said, the Carter/Cosey axis of the group was
the one that came up with the dancey stuff for the most part, leaving the
weird/disturbing and downright noisy bits mainly to Genesis P. Orridge and
Peter Christopherson. Chris Carter did a lot of the synths/electronics work
whereas Cosey played guitar, sang a bit, took off her clothes and did
interesting and entertaining things with microphones.

After TG shut up shop, Chris and Cosey stayed together (their relationship
being more than a working one) and began releasing material as, erm, Chris
And Cosey. 0/10 for the original name, guys. There followed a number of
albums on Rough Trade, such as _Trance_ and _Heartbeat_ which bounce
between synth-pop and rather noisier, less structured pieces or ambient
stuff. In a way the formula echoes that used back in the TG days, but less
extreme. While they did occasional rebound into commercial territory
("October Love Song") it was really only after 1985/6 and the _Techno
Primitiv_ album that their music began to take on a more dance-oriented
approach.

In recent years their albums have largely been in a dance vein, never quite
getting into whatever the current trend was but very much ploughing their
own furrow. That doesn't necessarily mean the music was *good* though,
their recent output (roughly from _Exotica_ through to _Pagan Tango_) was
pretty samey and while there are moments of brilliance here and there, it's
not really up to the standards of their earlier work (IMHO).

Their most recent album _Muzik Fantastique!_ sees them dabbling a little in
techno and Cosey's vocals becoming rather more tuneful (while I won't deny
they've always been...distinctive and that they've fitted the music, it
used to be the case that at times it seemed she couldn't carry a tune in a
bucket). It also sounds amazing - it has a very "deep" sound with lots
going on.

There's also been various bits'n'bobs over the years, like Cosey's solo
album (and accompanying booklet), Chris's excellent _The Space Between_,
collaborations with all sorts of people, from Olde Style Industrialists
like Boyd Rice, through the likes of Robert Wyatt to the Eurythmics, live
albums, soundtracks...all sorts of things.

There's a bunch of compilations to choose from too. IMHO, the best is
probably _Collectiv Two_ (only ever released in Europe?) with _Reflection_
(on Wax Trax!) coming a poor second. The _Collectiv_ series are probably
the best intro of the lot - _Collectiv One_ collects some Chris Carter solo
material and some collaborations, _Two_ is a good "Best Of", _Three_
is...oh damn, I can never remember, oh, yeah, it's a soundtrack and a live
album bunged together, and _Four_ is rare archive material.

I would guess that by your description of the Chris And Cosey you've heard,
you might want to check out their later material first. I'd define
_Exotica_, _Trust_, _Pagan Tango_ and _Muzik Fantastique!_ as being their
dancey stuff, with the last being the best of the bunch with _Trust_ in
second place.

Hope this info is of use.

I think it's about time this stuff gets FAQed. I'm sick of seeing it.

If someone is compiling a definite list of these samples, I'll contribute.
I've found some 'Mind' samples in obscure movies that I'll bet no one here has
