MINI-REVIEWS
Freaky Chakra - Black Light Fantasy advance cassette (Astralwerks)
The long awaited new album from San Francisco's Daum Bentley doesn't go
into the drum'n'bass direction I expected based on his recent remix for
Toronto's Transformantra, but instead continues to successfully mine the
tranced-out techno sounds Freaky Chakra is known for.
Messiah - Progenitor 12" (Thirsty Ear)
Produced by the infamous Stevø, whose Some Bizzare label helped define the
industrial scene in the 80s, the untreated Messiah track on this EP is
basically shite. But the accompanying pair of remixes by Death In Vegas
(dubby electronica) and Roni Size (drum'n'bass, natch) are worth a listen
or two.
Beatseed - Moonboots 12" (Thrive)
Four member Seattle dance act on the "big beat" (i.e. Chemical Brothers)
tip. I can't figure out why they need four people to produce this sort of
stuff, but least they're better than Crystal Method.
Iridium - The Racquet EP 12" (Lowdown)
Following up on an appearance on Lowdown's debut compilation release from
last year, Vancouver's Iridium offers up four tracks of deep, laid back
techno that could only have come from the west coast.
U-Sheen/Delarosa - Let's Talk Swimming Pools split 12" (Fluid Ounce)
Stunning debut from this new NYC label featuring the first outing from the
solo d'n'b project of Tortoise's Johnny Herndon, backed up by two tracks
from an electronic post-rock five piece from Atlanta.
Various - State of the Nu-Art 2 2xCD (Blue Planet)
As with the first volume, the hip hop tracks early on don't do much for me,
but by halfway through the first disc, things pick up nicely with exclusive
tracks from Plug, Mike Paradinas, Witchman, Jammin' Unit, The Bowling Green
and many more. Not perfect, but a generally solid collection of breakbeats,
dark dub and jungle riddims.
Third Eye Foundation and V/Vm - split 12" (Fat Cat)
Boy howdy! Frontrunner for mindfuck of the month here, folks. The TEF side
is a 12 minute epic that starts out as a dark breakbeat monster, and
mutates into an atmospheric guitar piece at the halfway point. As for the
V/Vm side, those wacky & enigmatic boys from Manchester have outdone
themselves with four tracks of post-industrial, noise-soaked electronic
madness. Mmmmmmm, tasty....
Silverkick - Vinyl Silk 12" EP (Fused & Bruised)
Well, to put it frankly, this record is wrong, plain and simple. It's sick
and twisted and weird and indescribable. And it's very, very good indeed.
