Does anyone remember this? I remember Reznor dissed them and FLA wrote in and
dissed back, but I can't recall what was said. I do know that that was the
reason I bought Caustic Grip just to see if it sucked and of course it beat
NIN's ass into the ground.

I remember that SPIN interview and Trent was very stupid with his remarks.
Then again, that really doesn't surprise me. In any case, I don't remember
FLA's response to Trent's comments but it wasn't as slamming. Trent's
stupidity was his own doing and later on, he regretted making the remark.
Stupid, stupid...

BTW, I enjoyed Caustic Grip and the album was way ahead of it's time when it
was first released. IMO, It certainly beats all of the NIN albums combined.

~During a brief relationship with a certain "old-schooler" of the Vancouver

I honestly don't think Trent had apologies in mind if he called Bill. In
reality, Trent probably wanted to wear a gimp costume and suck Bill's dick.

The info you requested, as stolen from http://www.mindphaser.com, IMO the
best site devoted to His Leebness.

-Here we go-
What did Trent Reznor say about FLA?

Excerpt from Spin Magazine, March 1992:
Trent Reznor- "For every band that I think has something to say,
like Ministry, or Meat
Beat Manifesto, there's twice as many that have realized the
formula for industrial music: repetitive 16th-note bass lines,
snarling vocals--usually unintelligible screaming about the
horrible condition of the planet or some kind of doomsday message
about how shitty things are. Front Line Assembly is a textbook case
of a band that---I can't listen to a fucking song, let alone an
album. Just monotonous, boring uninspired bullshit. And they're far
more traditional and far more exemplary of 'industrial' than NIN
is."

Trent later issued an apology to FLA. I don't know what it said, so
if anyone can enlighten me I would appreciate it.

Bill responded like this: (in an interview by Sandra Garcia in B
-side Magazine)

"The worst thing about the Trent incident is the apology. I know he
didn't write that. I think his manager wrote that. I think I have
less respect for him sending that apology. If he didn't send it, I
would have just thought that he was an asshole." He continues, "I
think the only person he didn't slag was Al [Jourgensen of
Ministry], and why? Because Al's the kind of guy where if you said
something like that about him he'd come looking for you."
Bill also considered slagging Trent in every interview he did, but
realized that it would make him look like a jerk.

------And that's that-

What I find interesting is that Trent said Al had "something to say".

Let's all not forget that that same person brought us the great tune
"Effigy(I'm not an)".

Ahh, Bill Leeb - What's in a name? A Leeb by any other name would not...

oh nevermind.

Yes, it was stupid on Trent's behalf, but it was no worse than FLA's recent
slamming of haujobb in an interview. And this coming from Bill Leeb who has
worked with haujobb on Noise Unit (albeit minimally) AND is on several of the
same labels as haujobb. Regardless, I think Trent was right on the money and
several years ahead of his time by his quote about FLA and industrial music.
He was merely stating that the 16th note bassline and distorted vocal thing
had gotten very stagnant and quite repetitive. I like electro and FLA but it
is true, both have gotten extremely repetitive in their inability to do new
things. There are exceptions of course, but by and large Trent was right
about his comments on FLA/electro-industrial - and this was years before most
other people had the guts to say the same. He shouldn't have made the
personal attack on FLA though and just left it vague.

>BTW, I enjoyed Caustic Grip and the album was way ahead of it's time when it

I don't think I agree with that. As much as I love FLA and "Caustic Grip", I
think "The Downward Spiral" is a much more defined, textured and complex
album. But this is all personal opinion so it doesn't really matter. :)

He didn't call Bill. He wrote to him and said he had done the interview and
apologized (not begged) for how the interview had came out. Apparently he
felt that the interviewer had coaxed him into saying negative things about
FLA and that the interviewer in question had no clue about the industrial
genre. I'm certainly an "old schooler" and remember all this by
reading/hearing about it at the time. I have several interviews with both
FLA and NIN (including the original Spin article) if anyone wants more info.

Hmm... well, you're probably correct but I remember Bill saying that Trent
Reznor had wrote him, in an interview. He doesn't mention anything of this
alleged phone call. Here's the interview that I took my information from
(only that part that pertains quoted):

Tempest Magazine, Issue #7, 1991©

Page #25 of the Front Line Assembly interview:

Tempest: What did you think of _Spin's_ article on the so-called "Industrial
Revolution"?

Leeb: I think the guy who wrote it doesn't like Industrial music at all and
obviously didn't research it at all because of all those statements about
Trent (Nine Inch Nails) being the leader of Industrial music. I mean anybody
that knows a bit about the whole thing will know right away that it is
totally false. I think it was bad research and bad writing on the writer's
behalf. Then there was Trent saying that stuff. He sent me an apology three
weeks before that, and I read that and thought, "hmm...this is kind of weird,
I wonder why he's bothering?" So a lot of people in interviews have asked me
that and rather than me go out publicly and slag him I just basically stop by
going, "I'm sure I'll run into him someday and if he has anything to say he
can say it to me, but he probably won't." Asides from that I just thought
why bother and get down to that kind of level. I think there's room for
everybody, so if I did the same thing I would be no worse or better than him.
So I'm just sort of like whatever, he's not important in my life or with
what I do so I just figure, who cares. I think anybody who can make up their
own mind will probably realize that. I mean if I don't like somebody I just
don't talk about them or whatever. I think the guy who wrote the article was
at fault also, and I also blame Spin's editors too. I mean they edit that
stuff, they read it before they print it. So if they couldn't put two and
two together. I mean like why even bother printing that, and then having to
go to the bother of printing an apology. You would think that they would
have the experience and the know how to avoid trouble like that. I think
that it was both their faults.

*end quote*

So, it would seem that either he failed to mention the phone call, or perhaps
the phone call came months later? Regardless, I was just going on the
information from an age-old interview. :)
