Man Kunto Maula
Khwaja Ali-ul Maula
Thanks in advance
Mausam
The reference you have cited relates more to the qawaali
(rendered by NFAK) than to the actual tradition associated
with this expression.
According to the Shia tradition --- Shias constitute a
sect of Islam --- these words were uttered by the
Holy Prophet in his last public sermon, which he delivered in
the month of Zul~hajj (the month when the Annual Pilgrimage
to Mecca takes place). He passed away a few months later.
The actual words are "...man kunto maula, fa~'Ali maula".
And they mean : "Whosoever I am leader of, Ali is (now)
his leader". According to the Shia tradition, these words
were followed by a prayer from the Prophet "O God, be kind to
those who love Ali, and be hostile to those who do not".
This tradition forms a strong basis for the Shia belief that
(Hazrat) Ali was chosen to be the Prophet's successor, as the
leader of the Muslim community. And, further, that he should
have been the first Caliph.
The Sunnis do not believe in the authenticity of this tradition.
Afzal
and abida also rendered it in her very own style
regs
ashu
Also by Shankar-Shambhu, Aziz Ahmed Khan Warsi, and NFAK.

It was also rendered by (?) in the TV serial Mirza Ghalib - an
excellent rendition, IMO.
Happy Listenings.
Satish Kalra
Satishji,
That is the Shankar Shambhu version.Gulzar used the recorded version
from the album 'The genius of Amir Khusro', composed by Murli Manohar
Swaroop. Shankar Shambhu have also sung 'Rang' [Aaj rang hai] in that
album, and imho, it is one of the most phenomenal rendering of any
qawwali I have ever heard. Believe it or not, Annu Kapoor sang that
version in an episode of Antakshari many years ago, and carried it off
very well.
I have been searching high and low for Shankar-Shambhu's qawwalis that
is commercially available, but haven't been fortunate. I'm afraid
stores have pulled them off their shelves, and sadly, most shopkeepers
haven't heard of them. A search on yahoo audio yields one hit,
notwithstanding their Laila Majnu/Barsaat ki Raat contributions. As
AIR have released CDs of Aziz Ahmed Khan Warsi, I pray that they also
release Shankar Shambhu's works.
I have often found surprisingly good mp3s of (recent) live performances
through http://blogsearch.google.com And of the millions of blogs out
there, only Smt. Shubha Mudgal's blog even mentions Shankar Shambhu.

There seems to be a VCD available from DD
http://www.ddindia.gov.in/About+DD/Programme+Archives/BEGIJM+AKHTAR.htm
The very highly respected musicologist Dr. Ashok Ranade comperes it and
that is a good enough reason for me to look out for it.
Prasar Bharati is selling another compilation:

Thanks for those details. I rememebr wartching the serial repeatedly
to find out who the singer/s for the number in the serial were, but
don't recall any details in the credits, and, of course (now we know),
being a previously recorded number, it wasn't included in the Mirza
Ghalib CD. As a matter of fact, that CD didn't even have Chitra's
"ishq mujhko nahiin vehshat hii sahii....", which I had to tape from
the video.
If anyone comes across this album, I would request they buy an extra
copy for me as well, with all costs to be reimbursed. I would also
keep an eye for it in the desi stores here. One never knows the
surprises sometimes they have - some rare albums which don't sell
anywhere else end up being in there.
Happy Listenings.

Off-topic.
Satishji,
I have sent an email to your yahoo id displayed above.
Arun
Satishji,
I found some mp3s from that album here:
http://tdil.mit.gov.in/CoilNet/IGNCA/amirmusc.htm
The ones from that album are in the section titled "anya gaayak'. The
voices, iirc, are Krishna Kalle, Dilraj Kaur, Sudha Malhotra and
Kankana Bannerjee.
Other persons who have lent their voices in that album include Vani
Jairam, Pt. Pratap Narayan, Pt. Jasraj, Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan &
Mukesh.
Cheers

Thanks Arun for the website address. The "E ri sakhi more khwaja" in the
anya gaayak category appears to be Jaffar Hussain Qawwal. I remember that
my _first_ qawwali concert of life was in SPIC MACAY National Convention
in Bhopal in 1998 and was by Jaffar Hussain. Oh! what a concert it was. I
was totally blown over by his qawwalis. Unfortunately, he passed away
within a couple of months of that concert. And I could never hear him live
again.
Does anyone have any live recordings of Jaffar Hussain Qawwal? I am
very interested in listening some more of his music.
Mausam
Mausam,
You may already know this, since you are an avid follower of ICM, but
there is a bandish rendered by Smt. Malini Rajurkar in raaga Dhani.
[Yes, the same raaga which has given the incomparable Pt. Vasantrao
Deshpande rendered/Pt. Abhisheki composed "gheyi chhand' (1) ]

(1) Habib Painter Qawwal
(2) Jani Baboo
(3) The so-called Hindu Qawwals, Shankar-Shambhu.
Thanks so much
Sandip.
i think i have identified another singer from the 'anya gayak' list -
it's jamil ahmad singing 'aaj rang hai ri'. it's the recording that was
used in the shyam benegal film 'junoon'.

To give credit where it is due, I want to mention that Ritu Chandra had
first linked to this site on RMIM some months back.
