I am glad that there is a newsgroup exclusively for Indian
music and I thank those who brought it into reality. Hopefully
this group will be free of mud-slinging and focuss entirely
on music. Now, I am interested in the ragas (Carnatic) on which
the following Tamil film songs are based. If someone can give the
swara for the respective ragas, that'll be excellent.

I have a comment on the above songs. the songs in Sudha dhanyasi,
Kalyani above are classic pieces. You can learn those ragas from the
songs. Whereas that is not true with Ilayaraja's compositions. He has
got some good ones, but they are occasional. Please wait for my list of
tamil film songs. I shall perfect it and post it soon. I guess
Ilayarajas compositions are perfect as far as notes are concerned. But
many of them badly lack "bhavam" which is essential to bring that raga
out completely.

A good example for Shanmugapriya is "Maryndhirundu paarkum marmamenna"
of Thillana mohanambal.
Some good ones of Ilayaraja I enjoyed are:
Thoongada vizhigal rendu== Agni Natchatram in --- Amruthavarshini
Idalil kadaiezudum ==Unnal mudiyum thambi --- Lalitha
Puthambudu poopprthado ==Thalapathy --- Hamsanandi
Malargale naadaswarangal== ?? --- Hamsadvani
