Girls went crazy, they screamed in a frenzy of excitement, as the good
looking young singer came up the stage. At the age of 23 he is one of the
hottest playback singers in India. Yes, he is no other than the handsome,
tall and talented SONU NIGHAM who is also the host of Zee TV's blockbuster
programme TVS Sa Re Ga Ma. Having started his singing career at the tender
age of three and a half, today Nigam has already sung superhits in movies
such as Papa kehte hain, Jeet, Tamanna, Aaja Mere Jaan, and is a singing
force to reckon with.
Sonu arrived in Trinidad (The West Indies) on Tuesday the 10th after his
hectic tour of North America. The singer, who has been nominated twice for
India's prestigious Filmfare Award, was accompanied by his father, Agam
Kumar Nigam, Bela Sulakhe, and Sunita Kapur. This was his first trip to the
West Indies. "After our shows here, we will be returning to Canada for
another performance in Edmonton" said he to the press outside the airport.
His last performance was on Sunday (15th)which was a mega hit. By the end
of the show, Mr Nigam got the people so excited with a Bhangrasong mixed
with -believe it or not- Macarena, that many people shed their inhibitions
and came on the dance floor and did the Bhangarena!
The guy told the audience that he was leaving on Tuesday (17th) so I
decided to meet him at The Holiday Inn (where he and the rest of the group were
staying.) on Monday. I must say I was amazed at his friendly, amiable and
down to earth disposition. I did not even have to remind him as to who I
was. He remembered me from our backstage meeting the previous night. So
we had a little tete-a-tete.
Excerpts:
Which was the first song you ever sung?
I sung 'Kya Hua Tera Wada'(Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahi) on stage when I was three and a
half years old.
At what age did you turn professional?
At the age of 16.
Which are the songs you have particularly enjoyed singing?
I particularly liked singing two songs, one from the movie HUMSE PYAR MAT
KARNA and the other from the movie PARDES. These two songs I have sung in
a totaly different style. In one of them I have sung like Mariah Carey!
Okay tell me about your favorite Indian singer.
Well I cannot pinpoint one. I think all seven of the major Indian singers
are great in their own way-Kishore Kumar, Talat Mehmood, Manna Dey, Mukesh,
Hemant Kumar, Mohamed Rafi and Mahender Kapoor.
Okay, how about foreign singers? Who is your favorite foreign singer?
Well I like many singers like- Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Michael
Bolton...(went on with a good few others!) and ofcourse my all time
favorite Michael Jackson. I like his performance on stage.
Tell me about the most unforgetable moment of your life.
Well there are many, lets see(after a short pause) Okay this is not 'the most'
unforgettable moment of my life but one of them. Last year I performed on
stage with Asha Bhosle and the whole Industry was there. Lata Mangeshkar
was there too. It was indeed an experience.
Who is the person you are closest to?
Well, my younger sister-Minal and my Mom.
Are you into sports?
I love sports- cricket badminton and table tennis, but I do not have time
for sports anymore. I only get time to do some exercise at home.
Tell me, what are the qualities you look for your would-be wife?
I look for qualities.. I know I will never find.....such a girl does not
exist. She has to be goodlooking, have consideration, respect, patience
since I am busy most of the times, kindness and 100% devotion.
So you are saying there arn't girls with these qualities..?
It is difficult to find a girl with all these qualities!(guess so..)
So...Tell me yu'r dating at the moment? (yup, I just hit him with a bat!)
At the moment - no. I spend most of my time at work and where I work
everybody is twice my age so I do not get to meet girls of my age.
Do you consider yourself to be old fashioned or a man of the modern world?
I think I am somewhere in between.
What is your ultimate ambition?
Do something like Mother Terrisa.(ambitious!)
What a nonsensical interview! Utter bilge! Absolute tripe!
Is this really the guy who is touted as the next Rafi? I'm appalled,
to say the least! Look at his list of "favourite Hindi film singers".
Bah!
Ravindra.
A RAFI-an!
And look at his list of "favourite Western singers"! Oh, my God, even
Michael Bolton!!! :-) Why not include John Tesh while he's at it? !!
Would add genuine depth to this illustrious collection he's named...:-)
Double bah!!! :-)
BTW, the interviewer too deserves a large part of the blame for the
sucky interview......... "what qualities are you looking for...?"
phew! what can one expect when the interviewer hasn't done her
homework?
