I may have a chance through correspondance and direct contact to get
interviews with Amit Kumar and Sudha Malhotra for our site
www.bollyvista.com, well I'm leaving an open email here as to what kind of
questions people would like to ask these two singers. You can either send
me a direct mail (my email address besides my name is a valid address to
send email to) or in the newsgroup. I can then arrange a small questionnair
to be sent for both the singers. Any suggestions? Please do let me know.
Regards

1. I understand that she sang a few beautiful ghazals under the baton of
Jagjit Singh (?).
Is it true, and what is the availability of that album?
Does she have a privatre bhajan album also? Title and
availability?
For Amit Kumar:
1. He sang "main ik panchhi matwaala re..." in Door Ka Raahii, as a
teenager. The same song was repeated in his voice in Mamta Ki Chhaon Mein,
almost 20 years later.
Whose idea was it - Kishore's or Amit's own?
2. In an interview in Filmfare back in 1988 or 1989, Amit Kumar made a
mention of Kishore's last Bengali recordings being released in a cassette
collection titled "Dui Kishore".
Did it really make the market? (I haven't seen it
anywhere, and my persistent inquiries have yeielded no results.)

Happy Listenings.
Satish Kalra
Kalra sahib, yes that is true, she made an album under Jagjit Singh in the
early 80s. I don't have that album, but I have a 5 CD set called Ghazal Ka
safar and in the volume 2 of that set, there is a ghazal by Mussafi sung in
her voice and MD is Jagjit Singh.. .he is the one who introduces the ghazal
in the album saying that in the early 80s, Sudha Malhotra made a ghazal
album and I gave the music for it.... the ghazal that I have is entitled:
Khwaab thaa, yaa khayaal thaa, kyaa thaa...
a nice ghazal and really melodious singing :)
Last time I met Sudha ji, it was the same day I had purchased the set and I
had just heard the ghazal in the car i was in... and I told her about that
and she said, yeah, i did make an album in early 80s... this time i'll ask
her the question more concretely. :-)
By the way, you can get the listing of the ghazals in that album at
bollyvista. Here is the link:

I think its a nice set to own :-D

As far as I know, she does... but I'll put that question in for the
interview as well to get a concrete answer.

Just as a note, I had heard about an album also in the early 90s called "Do
Kishore" in which Amit Kumar and his younger brother sang KK's songs
together.... I could never get more informaiton on that one either.
Amit Malhotra
Amit,
Would really like to know Sudha Malhotra's view on the Mangeshkar monopoly
(specifically Lata) and how much that hurt her career.
Why didn't she pursue a career in music direction after Didi?
About Amit (the other), in his opinion what would be the top 10 songs of
Kishore?
Looking forward to your post on the interview.

Perhaps my understanding is from the same 5-volume set. :-)

This one must have been the Hindi version of "Dui Kishore", as far as my
line of thinking goes. But his younger borther, Sumit, was only 5 years old
at the time of Kishore's death, in 1987. That would put him at about 13
years of age even in 1994/95.
By the way, that also reminds me - there was an incomplete film (with
Madhubala?) in which there was a song of Kishore - I can't recollect which
documentary on Kishore mentions it.
Could you please ask him about that one too?
That would be a good question to ask her. However in an interview in a
Marathi newspaper, she recalled both Lata and Asha very fondly indeed.
However she expressed disappointment that records of some of her
Marathi songs were not well marketed. For instance, though she had
initially sung "shukrataara mand vaara", the cassettes sold in the
market contain Anuradha's (highly inferior, IMO) version. Similarly,
"visarsheel khaas malaa" was initially sung by Sudha, but the tapes
contain the version by Asha.
Suman Kalyanpur (as also Jagjit Kaur) too spoke very highly of Lata
and Asha, as singers and as her colleagues, in an interview in the
same series. [These interviews were published in 1997 in a Marathi
newspaper called "SakaaL"].
Thanks for the offer. I'd like to know if they have recorded in any
other language(s) other than Hindi.
Regards,
- Dinesh.
I suggest you engage her in an extended conversation about the song
from 'Didi', including what her contribution to making of the song
was. How did she come to think up a tune, how she conveyed the tune
to the producer/director and the music director, N. Dutta; who arranged
the orchestration and conducting, and if she had anything to do with it.
Also of interest would be: her thoughts on how the singer relates to
the words of the songs; her impressions of key figures she has had
more extensive interaction with--Roshan, N. Dutta, Sahir, et al.

Amit Kumar:
1. Does he get royalty money for all Kishore Kumar songs released by
HMV and others under new albums, because he is the son after all. I
remember in a Filmfare interview in the late '80s Amit K sounded very
upset with HMV for not giving him royalty money.
2. What are his views on R.D. Burman. Ask how he felt when RDB
switched to Kumar Sanu for 1942 A Love Story. (RDB tried his best
though to lift Amit's career)
3. How is Leena Chandavarkar doing? (Be careful when asking this
question. I heard that there was something fishy going on between
them)
Sudha Malhotra:
1. Who was her favorite music director.
2. It is possible she never heard of A.R. Rahman. If she knows him,
ask her if his jingles ever delight her grand kids. (I doubt they do)
3. Any missed opportunity to sing a song that was sung by someone else
and became famous.
4. What was the trend then among MDs about choosing a singer for their
songs. Did they simply play favorites or what?

Not to discourage any questions being asked, but in a letter to the editor
of Filmfare, Mr. Vijay Kishore Dubey, a then Vice-President (?) of HMV wrote
that no royalties were owed to Kishore Kumar or his estate since HMV's
royatly contract was with the producer/s of a film and not with the singer/s
for any film music. This letter appeared a couple of months after that
interview - the same which I referred to in an earlier post of mine
regarding Dui Kishore.

I think your reference is to their appearance together in some concert where
she introduces herself as Leena Chandavarkar and is at once interrupted by
Amit Kumar saying, "Leena Ganguly", and she smilingly/sheepishly repeats,
"Yes, Leena Ganguly"!
I found that whole occurence really not only unnecessaary on Amit's part,
but also mean. How come he himself only uses Amit Kumar as his name, if he
was so particular about the family's last name!
In this regard, please ask Amit Kumar why she did not get to sing more songs
in films, despite having such a nice voice as is evidenced by the beautiful
lori she sang in Mamta Ki Chhaon Mein?
...rest snipped...
Is this contract with producers universally true or only applied in case of
Kishore Kumar?

Did Sudha Malhotra sang more than two ghazals of Ghalib?
AIR often used to broadcast two ghazals of Ghalib sung by SM in early 60s:
(i) buske dushwar hey har kaam ka aasaN hona
adami ko bhi mayyasar nahiN insaan hona
(ii) muddat hui hey yaar ko mehmaN kiyey huey
josh-e-qadeh sey bazm-e-chiraghaN kiyey huey
IMHO both these are amongst the finest rendering of Ghalib's ghazals
Regards,
Irfan
How about the tape/CD availability of these and other Ghazals sung
by Sudha Malhotra?
-UVR.
It is not. It is a subset of the 10-cassette box that HMV
had released earlier and with the same name. It came with
a booklet containing the words of the ghazals. Even the
fuller set represents a shoddy job done by the editors,
Gulzar and Jagjit Singh.
Ashok
Ashok,
I agree (for the most part) with your assessment about the
quality of the album, but are you sure that the cassette
version had 10 tapes and not just 5? I ask because I have
a 5-cassette set of the same name (authentic, AFAIK, as it
is complete with the 'holographic' company insignia, and
all that), and it, too, contains more Ghazals than the 5-CD
set Amit spoke of. Will be obliged if you could check and
confirm.
There *is* one thing to be said in favor of this collection,
IMO. It serves as a reasonably good vehicle for introducing
the voices of Begum Akhtar, Saigal, Master Madan et al to a
generationful of so-called Ghazal 'connoisseurs' who think
that people like Pankaj Udhas and Chandan Das are among the
best Ghazal singest to have ever lived. Some of the Ghazals
selected (from the first two cassettes in my collection) are
also among the better examples of Urdu poetry.
One surprise discovery for me in this album was the voice of
Rajkumar Rizvi singing 'tuu ne yeh phuul jo zulfo.n me.n
sajaa rakkhaa hai' in a tune different from, yet in a style
highly similar to, Mehdi Hassan's.
-UVR.
Hello Everybody,
The interview with Miss Sudha Malhotra (now Mrs. Sudha Motwani) is
done, it should be online soon enough (give me time to get back to
Canada), I'm going to be meeting her again this weekend, if there are
any further questions that you have in your mind and you think she can
answer them, please don't hesitate to post them here.
Amit Kumar should be done soon as well.... waiting for that one. Also
I have the possibility of asking questions to Mr. Pankaj Udhas,
anybody has any questions for him, you can ask me here, I'll make sure
to get them to him.
Best Regards
Amit Malhotra
Why would any one want to ask any question of Pankaj Udhas! Just IMVPO. :)
Happy Listenings.
