A few rich women living close by would pool in some money and hold a
lottery to decide who shall have the whole bunch of money. Whoever wins
throws a lavish party in celebration. This party is called Kittie Party.
For me, its a vulgar exhibition of excess wealth.

cheers,

Ankur.

The word Kittie is drived from: Kit, i.e.: a box.

The ladies (generally family members and friends) agree to meet
once a week or bi-weekly and agree to contribute a set amount of
money at each gathering. A number is drawn and the winner is
given the pool money. On next get-together the prior winner / winners
is / are excluded from the draw list and another lady will get the
total contribution. It is NOT A LOTTERY, rather a crude way
of saving the money. The first winner has the ability to use the
money for the longest period, while the last winner may be struck
with
loss of contribution from a drop-out or group being disbanded
(Nateeja: Than-Than Gopal)

Since, the ladies have already put-on their best sarees /
salwar-kameezs,
good amount of jewlery, make-up and hair-dos, so they might as well
spend the remaining after-noon chatting, playing cards - many times
with money at stake, have goolgappas, chat, rasmalai and other
snack foods and gossip about various topics. It certainly is
better
than watching the Idiot Box on which the subject show is being
aired.
