This evening I was watching Kismat (1968) starring Biswajeet and
Babita. Although film is utterly junk, OP Nayyar's music in it is
topnotch. Babita looks gorgeous throughout the film, especially in
the song 'aao huzuur tumako'. I was pleasantly surprised by her
perfect sense of timing and awkward dance steps in keeping with her
drunk act in the song. Did this song start the trend of a drunk
heroine singing a song in a party in films of the late '60s and early
'70s, or was it some other earlier song? The other 3 memorable songs
that come to mind are:

1. kaise rahuu.N chup (Inteqaam, 1969) filmed on Sadhana
2. ra.ngiilaa re tere ra.ng me.n (Prem Pujari, 1969) filmed on
Waheeda Rehman (my top favorite)
3. jaane kya pilaayaa tuune (Jugnu, 1973) filmed on Hema Malini

Two forgotten yet decent songs were:
1. haa.N jii haa.N mai.nne sharaab pii hai (Seeta Aur Geeta, 1972)
filmed on Hema Malini
2. do ghuu.NTh mujhe bhii pilaa de (Jheel Ke Us Paar, 1973) filmed on
Mumtaz

Any other memorable ones from this period? But I think the original
such song was 'mohabbat me.n aise qadam dagamagaaye' (Anarakali,
1953). I saw the film years ago on TV, so I cannot recall how the
song was filmed. Did Bina Rai sing it in some sort of a mehfil or a
party? Any other from those days?

IIRC, Chandan Ka Palna (1967) has a song "sharaabii sharaabii meraa
naam ho gayaa" picturised on Meena Kumari.

Any actress, even if she is just an extra in the film, singing a song
drunk anywhere (not necessarily in a party) would fit the discussion.
But then a heroine doing it in a party would be a high drama and a
sure ticket to a hit. Any other character or any other place would
not shake the audience much, as we can see in a wasted example of a
good song 'piike ham tum jo chale aaye hai.n is mahafil
me.n' (Gumnaam, 1965) that Helen and Nanda sing, with just Manoj Kumar
present to watch them in disgust.

Anyway, it looks like this trend of an actress getting drunk and then
singing was nothing new in the 1960s. It probably started with
'mohabbat me.n aise qadam Dagamagaaye' (Anarkali, 1953). I would be
curious to know if it shocked people then.

Question (Quiz too): Did any actress get drunk and then drove a car in
any film?

Yes, at least as early as 1975 :-)

Ah, yes - all those broken "gamalaa-s"! IIRC, though, one doesn't
actually get to see the drunken driving.

Warm regards,
Abhay

Ah, I got it :-) Just took 1 minutes for me to recall. Yeah, broken
"gamalas", you are right, Abhay Sahab! Now that was a great film and
great performances by both her and him.

Professor Sahab, Quiz for you: Name the film and the actress.

The "MaiN Nashe Men HooN" song was picturised on Nishi, who
was given an extended role in the film. There were quite a
few snide comments in film journals of the time as to how
this came about.

This song may not count on another count also (pun unintended !)
IIRC, Nishi doesn't get drunk or behave in a drunken fashion.
Her main concern is to get Raj Kapoor drunk.

What about "Koi Bhi Naaam Do" from Lava (1985) sung by Lata Mangeshkar
and picturised on Dimple? Not from the 60s/70s period, but qualifies
for "a drunk heroine, a party and a song"

Yes, that sure qualifies. Never saw Lava before. Does Dimple get
drunk and sing to embarrass the parents of Rajiv Kapoor in this song?

maybe this is not of the era you are looking for, but since you've
already approved "lava" ...

jab apane ho jaaen bevafaa to - soutan (tina munim)

Dear Asif!

You can't consider "do ghuu.NTh mujhe bhii pilaa de", because it
doesn't fulfill two of the three criteria you cite.
Mumtaz isn't drunk in this song, she throws all the liquor, which is
offered to her and two is hardly a party.

Other than picking up on your choices, I haven't any real
contributions to make! ;-)
