For all the bouquets, Sufi music evolved over a thorny path in India.
The poetry of the mystics-Amir Khusrau, Hazrat Moinuddin Chishti,
Hazrat Nizamuddin, Kabir and Bulla Shah-did not find many takers
initially. It was mostly heard at the Ajmer Sharif and Nizamuddin
Auliya dargahs. Qawals like Gulam Sabir Nizami carry on the tradition;
Nizami belongs to a family of qawals which has been singing at the
Nizamuddin dargah for 700 years.
He feels singers who have no clue about Sufi gayaki (style of singing)
are exploiting the art for money nowadays. "Real artistes suffer
because of this," says the annoyed qawal. His younger brother, Mohammed
Akbar, joins his brother in recitals.

very Interesting.
Bulle Shah I have heard in "beshaq mandir masjid to.Do"
I have not heard/read anything of the writings of moinuddin
Chishtii nor of nizamuddin.
could anyone please post the links where some writings of
the above three are available.
also, what was the time frame of the three?
Was Bulle Shah also primarily a faith oriented personality?

One hint about another Bulleh Shah song you've heard. Gulzar took a
composition of his, mauled the lyrics and made your favorite composer
set music to it. The latter did a fabulous job. Finally, Farah Khan had
an inspiring moment when she decided to plonk the hero on top of a
moving train.

In the same film, Gulzar took a Ghalib shair and inserted it into
another song. The shair was the maqta of a ghazal. This ghazal was sung
by K. S. Saigal in the film 'Yehudi ki Ladki'

I am sure you know that Irfan Bhai is a very senior RMIMer,
much older than you. He addresses you as "Rawat-ji".
And you address him simply as "Irfan". IMHO, not done.
I am aware that, on NGs, people may not observe such niceties.
Even then.................
As for the spelling of the Sufi saint's name, I think the
Urdu spelling is the correct one.

The original and amazing expression of the above (Chal
chaiyaan, chaiyaan, chaiyaan, chaiyaan) was of none other
than Bulle Shah. Bulla has been shunted out of the dera
(house) of his Kamil Murshid (ultimate guru - who is going
to lead him to the light) Hazrat Shah Inaayat Kadri (aka
Inaayat Shah). The guru doesnt want to see Bulle's face and
is very upset with him on some issue. Bulla cries day and
night and is going crazy in viyog and vichhoda. The fire of
his love for his guru is burning him and he is trying to
find ways to somehow seek his mercy and get back to his
fold. Thats when he remembers his guru's love for music.
Bulla goes and joins a group of nautch girls. Learns to sing
and dance and also to play sarangi. And on the occasion of
an Urs (where he knows his Murshid will be coming) goes to
that mazaar in the guise of a woman and sings and dance.
Thats when and where he says:
Tere Ishq nachaya kar thaiyaa, thaiyaa ( and goes on to add)
Tere ishq ne dera mere andar kita
bhar ke jahar payala mein te aapey pita
jhabde bhaudi ve tabiba nahin te mein mar gaiyan
Tere Ishq nachaya kar thaiyaa, thaiyaa
he further says:
Aisey ishqe di jhangi vich mor (peacock) bullenda
sanu kibla te kaba sohna yaar disenda
sany ghayal karke phir khabar na layeea
Tere Ishq nachaya kar thaiyaa, thaiyaa

Bulla had written about our Krishna of Braj.
The lines are somewhat like this:

akhiyan de vich nazar na anavey, kaisi bikhadi khed rachiyaa

here is one of the shortest but the ultimate Kafi of Bulle
Shah. It is a very touching description of Master and
disciple relationship where he gives the example of a dog
and is telling himself that even a dog is better than you.
He says Bulle you keep awake all night and pray... so what -
look at the dog (kutta) even he keeps awake all night and
that too at the door of his master but he barks and keeps a
watch for the safety of his Malik (master) and during the
day he finds a place for himself wherever on dirt and
garbage. A dog doesnt leave his master's door even if he is
beaten a hundred times and not given anything to eat. And
last he adds `Bulle Shah quickly find a better way to please
your master, else even a dog is better than you (Taintho Uttey).
Raati jageny kare ibaadat, raati jagan kuttey, taintho uttey
Bhokkan band mool na hundey, ja roodi tey sutey, taintho uttey
Khasam apney da dar na chhad-dey, bhanven vajjan juttey,
taintho uttey
Bulle Shah koi vasat vihaj lai, nahi tey baazi lai gaiy

I got a good collection of 30 poems by the great writer at
that link.
Searching the net, I also found that Abida Parveen had
released an album "BABA BULLEH SHAH". I checked and it is
available at my cassette waalaa, so I am going to fetch it
tomorrow.
This is the full lyrics for thaiya thaiya from the site.
Looking for some Punjabi knowing guy/ gal to please

tuu satara.Ngii re." (Dil Se).
This sher features in "nuktaachii.n hai Gam e dil."

line as "ishq par zor nahiin hai ye wo aatish fitanaa, ke lagaaye na

But I think the word substituted was not "fitna", but
"tishna". Mirza Musharraf played a characteristic cameo in
the movie as a "poetaster". His taKHallus (in the movie)
was "tishna". When he couldn't come up with a suitable new
sher (in the same metre) in reply to what Shyama and Ratna
were "dishing out", he quietly wrote down this sher for
the other qawwal (KHursheed Bawara). The sher was that of
Ghalib, except that the taKHallus had been substituted.
I am sure somebody who has the audio/VHS cassette of the
movie can verify whether the info given above is correct.
And, if so, a suitable correction needs to be made in the ISB/
Geetaayan websites. Maybe, Shri Vinay Jain is also reading
this thread.

And, I think at this point much footwear was thrown in their aamaruKh,
as my (compulsory) NCC NCOs used to say.
Bad form and all that. But I think this was a mistake.
The correct word and taKHallus was in fact "fitna". Sorry.
