I do know that Achanak, *ing Vinod Khanna, was the first Indian movie, or was it
the first Hindi movie, with no songs. Would the netgurus kindly provide the
names of other movies, which similarly, donot contain any songs?
Coming to think of it, I think that there is an old Tamil movie, Andha Naal,
starring Sivaji Ganesan and Pandaribai, which does not contain any songs. Will
some netguru be able to provide the exact details in this regard?
Cheers

Hi!
Well i think Achanak is the first Hindi movie with no songs.
While on the subject of movies with no songs - why doesnt conduct a RJGK (or
whatever the acronym is) on Movies with no songs :). If no one minds - I'll
conduct it *GRIN*.

I was wondering if Aamir's Holi had any songs in it. Similarly
Balu Mahendra's Veedu (which won Archana the Natl award) doesnt have
any song (but buy the sound track which is Illayaraja's How to Name it).
but the sound track is excellent. The best back ground score for any
Indian film in my opinion. Also Ram Gopal Verma's Raat did not have any
songs. Pushpak, of course was also songless. I think that there
are a few Kannada/Malayalam movies that are songless : Tabarane Kathe (K),
Chidambaram (M), Eli Pathayam (M) and maybe Oru CBI Diary Kurippu (M).
Surely there are Ray movies without songs.
Coming to Andanaal, it did not have any songs as you mentioned. I think
that Andhanaal is one of the best movies made in India. It had a great
and interesting plot (SG is a Japanese Spy!!!) and some interesting camera
angles. It was directed by "Veenai" Balachander the famous Carnatic music
exponent and _I_ consider it Shivaji's best performance. A must see.

Not at all! This has a first derivative to music. I think it is relevant.
Actually, there might be something to learn here. It takes some guts to not
include a song or two (or a dozen) in a movie because that means you won't
earn some big bucks on cassette sales. Also that means that the only
saleable items you have are the acting and the plot. A great plot does not
make the average movie-goer hum it for days and days so it's quickly
outtasite, outtamind. Great acting might be imprinted for a longer time but
does not carry the appeal of songs. So I can see why producers are tempted
to have lots of cutesy songs in a movie but these movies starkly bring out
the opposite - if songs are not necessary to further the plot, don't use
them!

I think you should go for it. RJGK-17 on movies with no songs then? That
will be the "Silence is golden" RJGK... *grin* Are background scores
counted in or counted out? Y'know Srini, if somehow you pull this off,
maybe I'll bow to you... ((:

In this context I remember a movie by Sunil Dutt in which he is
the only actor, i.e does a solo act. Pretty boring! That is also
a first I guess. Incidentally that movie had no songs in it.

I know one more film Ek rooka huwa faisala ...I don't know the
director( I think Basu Chatterji) but Punkaj Kapoor has acted in this movie.
KHAMOSH??
vinod
KHAMOSH, Directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra (PARINDA, 1942:ALS), starring
Naseeruddin Shah, Amol Palekar, Shabana Azmi etc., was a
real slick Hollywood style murder mystery with no songs.
EK RUKA HUA FAISLA, Directed by Basu Chatterjee, Starring Pankaj Kapoor,
was another movie (telefilm?) without songs. It was a remake of
the courtroom drama 12 ANGRY MEN and was pretty good too.

Here's a small quiz on "who sang this in the movie"?
Combining both M&M...
All you have to tell is the name of the actress/actor who
moved lips for the song...
Please e-mail your entries to me, do not post any answer(s) here.
Thank you. Enjoy the quiz...

-------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Mehbooba mehbooba
[film: Sholay]
2. Ang lag ja baalmaa
[film: Mera Naam Joker. This actress was the only
repeated RK-heroine (RK in RK-Productions) other than Nutan]
3. Mud mud ke na dekh
[This actress was Jewish, my roommate told me recently.
He might be wrong -- does that help??]
4. Chhotisi yeh zindagani re Char din ki jawani teri
[yet another question from RK movie! The scene is
that this Tangewala is singing, and RK is sitting
in the Tanga (or is it Bailgadi? Doesn't matter) --
The singer is Mukesh]
5. Maine rakha hai muhabbat apne afsaane ka naam
[film: Shabnam. This actor was essentially a comedian,
and this type of song is not very common for him!]
6. Jeevan ke safar mein raahi milte hain bikhar jaane ko {FEMALE}
[film: Munimji. The male version is picturized on Dev Anand]
7. Galyaant saankhli sonyachi hi pori konaci
[film: DHKMN. This lamp is safe!! :-) ]
8. Nagma-o-sher ki saugaat kise pesh karoon
[This woman was dress-designer for a very famous movie which
Ghulam Mohammed partly composed music of. This song is NOT
from that movie]
9. Ab jo mile hain to mujhko nigahon mein rehne de saajna
[film: Caravan]
10. Jata kahan hai deewane
[film: CID. This song is not featured in the mid-80's
re-released version of the film. It was probably not there
even in the original (mid-50's), but the song is there on
the record. Since I don't expect you to have seen this
song in the movie, an educated guess is what's expected]

Yaa, i guess it was YADEN. That movie had only one actor. It might sound boring at the first instant, but I think it was a pretty good movie.

Me no netguru but will take a stab at it. I think netgurus have
written quite a few movies by now. But nobody mentioned Raakh so far.
Was there any song in that movie.
TIA,
Kalyan
Yes it does (atleast 1 that I remember). The film had music by Salil and
there is a song when their blind friend sings on the beach describing the
sunset or some such thing.
