Over the last few weekends I happened to see a few of
Rajendar (Silver Jubilee) Kumar's films. He must have
been a very lucky person since all the movies that I
have seen so far have some of the finest songs that I
have heard.
1. Mere Mehboob: Music director Naushad produced some
very lovely tunes like:
mere mehboob tuzhe meri muhabbat ki kasam.
I can listen to this songs for ever. It has so much
depth in it. You can enjoy it even more when you
are actually seeing the movie as you will be able
to see it in the right context. This song has been
sung by Md Rafi and Lata and both have done such a
remarkable job that it's tough to say who has sung
it better.
2. Mere Mehboob: Another lovely song I can think of is
ay husn zara jaag tuzhe ishk jagaye.
Simply amazing!
BTW, Mere Mehboob is a wonderful film as well. However
you can see it just for the songs. Sadhana is very
lovely in this film.
3. Geet: This is an OK film from the story standpoint.
Some wonderful songs including,
aaja tuzhko pukare mere geet re, and
kahiN tum wohi to nahee
The movie stars Mala Sinha as the heroine and I would
say is adequate.
4. Arzoo: Again a Sadhana and R Kumar film. Another film
with great songs:
chalke teri aankhoN se sharab aur zyada
phooloN ki rani, baharoN ki malika, tera muskurana...
There is another film with Sadhana that I now forget
that has a great song by Lata who sings in a very high
pitch:
ajee roothkar ab kahaN jaayega, jahaaN jaayega hame paayega.
To summarize, it will pay to pick a Rajendar Kumar film
randomly if it is songs that you are really looking for
in a film.

This is a song sung by Mahendra Kapoor and Lata. I forget the
starting but it goes something like
jiske baare meiN maine socha tha, kahiN tum wohi to nahee, wohi to
nahee.
The music director, if I'm not mistaken or confused, is Shanker
Jaikishen and the film is by Ramanand Sagar. I have been seeing
so many Rajender Kumar films lately that I am a little confused
over which song is from which film, etc. :-)
While on the subject of Naushad, I started seeing a film of
R. Kumar and Waheeda (oh what a lovely face!), Doli. I barely
saw two songs before I had to stop. This film has Naushad as
the MD and the sonds didn't seem that good. The lyrics were
awesome, though. Any comments? I will have to wait till the
weekend to finish that film.
While on this subject, anybody remember the film that has the
song I mentioned in my last article,
ajee roothkar ab kahaN jaayega, jahaaN jaayega hame paayega...
Lovely song.

khud hi ko kar bulund itna ki har taqdeer se pehle
there is one song which goes...
jiske sapne humey roz aate rahe...yun satate rahe..
yeh batado kahin tum wohi tou nahi...wohi tou nahi..
>While on this subject, anybody remember the film that has the
>song I mentioned in my last article,
>ajee roothkar ab kahaN jaayega, jahaaN jaayega hame paayega...
>Lovely song.
Arzoo..
The songs from Geet were by Kalyanji-Anandji I think.
The particular song I vividly remember is "Aaja tujh
ko pukare mere geet re".
The other song "aji rooth kar..." could be from
"Aayee Milan Ki Bela".
Some other Rajendra Kumar films with great songs are:
Sooraj.......Baharon phool barsavo....(Rafi, S-J, Hasrat?)
Aman.........S-J
Talaash.....SD Burman.....teri naina (MannaDey), Palkon ke peeche
se kya (Rafi,Lata)
Gora Aur Kala......Itna ik din ye(Rafi), Dheere dheere hai koi(Mukesh,
,Lata) Lakshmi-Pyare, Anand Bakshi.
Shatranj..........SJ.....Jangal mein morna....
Ayee Milan kI bela...all the songs.....SJ
Saathi......Mera pyar bhi (Mukesh, Naushad)
Palki.....Naushad.....classical
Sangam......yeh mera prem patr...Rafi....S-J
Jhuk Gaya Aasman.......Kaun Hai jo sapnon & all the
rest of the songs.....S-J.
Anjaana & Aap aaye bahaar aayee also had good songs by LP.
That is all I rember now but Rajendra Kumar's movies were
good and songs in those were SUPER.
Regards........................Sashi.

The song is also from the same movie - Arzoo - which you wrote briefly
about in your first article. It is a cute song - Sadhana is actually
daring Rajendra Kumar to leave her party and her life, in effect, I
guess. The real treat is Rafi's version, just one stanza though :-( ,
in which Rajendra Kumar protests Sadhana's leaving him after a
rendezvous. The song is set in the middle of a lake in scenic Kashmir
and the locale only adds to the romantic mood. Here's Rafi's version:
"Aji humse bachkar kahan jayeiga,
Jahan jayeiga hame payeiga
Yeh kaisa nasha hai, yeh kaisa asar hai
Na kaboo mein dil hain, na bas mein jigar hain
Zara hosh aa lein chale jayeiga
Zara hosh aa lein chale jayeiga
Tahar jayeiga, Tahar jayeiga
Aji humse bachkar.."
"CHaLKe tere .." was the song I liked least in this movie [I agree
with Abhay's analysis] followed closely by the Lata solo "Bedardi
balma" in the case of which it was being overdosed, thanks to Vividh
Bharati's "Man Chahe Geet" prorgram. The other song that completes
the list for this movie is Rafi's "Ae nargise mastana" [I think you
already mentioned "Ae phoolon ki rani"]
Talking about "Mere Mehboob," another number that is worth mentioning
is "Yaad mein teri ... karvaten badalte rahen".
Rajendra Kumar probably owns the distinction of failing in love the
most number of times while Meena Kumari bags it in the female star
category. "Mere Mehboob" was surprisingly one of the few movies in
which Rajendra Kumar didn't end up losing his lady love. Some of the
ones where he is not so lucky include:
Dil Ek Mandir - The fact that Meena K is in it should give
away the story!
I like the Rafi song from this movie - "Yaad na jaiye,
bitee dinon ki"
Pyar ka Sagar - again, w/ Meena Kumari. This time, she ends up as his
bhabhi!
This situation has him soulfully mouthing Mukesh's "Sada
khush rahe tu".
There is also a duet (Rafi,Lata or Mukesh,Lata) that the
two sing before the twist in the story - I can't
recollect it - can anyone help ?
Dhool Ka Phool - w/ Mala 'I can't act' Sinha
It has the Rafi,Lata number I love to forget. It is the opening
song where the two are taking part in a college contest.
The other well-known song is "Tu hindu banega na musalmaan banega"
Who was the MD for this movie ?
I agree with Rahul that there are many Rajendra Kumar movies that
invariably had a good musical score.

As Neha has already pointed out, this is the song
"Ho jiske sapne roz hume aate rahe, dil lubhaate rahe

Are you sure this is a Naushad film ? I checked the Naushad film list which
I had posted earlier on RMIM, and Doli isn't listed. Is this the same movie
which has the song "Doli chaRke dulhan sasural chali...." ?? Doesn't sound like
Naushad at all.

Perhaps Naushad isn't the MD afterall :-)

I think Pradeep Kumar would win the closely-fought contest :-)

Actually, I'm not too fond of this song. ThoRasa roti-soorat lagta hai :-) But,
I simply adore the other song which Rahul cited "Ai husn zara jaag tujhe ishq
jagaae..." What a smooth-flowing tune... goes up and down with the
characteristic Naushad grace. Although almost all the songs of Mere Mehboob are
superb, I am particularly fond of "Tere pyaar me dildaar jo hai mera
haal-e-zaar, koi dekhe ya na dekhe Allah dekh raha hai..." Lata's voice sounds
so sweet and melodious in this song.

I sure am :-) I agree that Shakil has received the recognition he deserves on
RMIM. I have been planning to post something on Shakil, esp. his GHazals for a
long time now, but haven't had the time/inspiration. Maybe I'll get to it soon.
For the time being here are some beautiful ashaar from Shakil's filmi GHazals:
Tumhine GHam ki daulat di baRa ehsaan farmaya
Zamaane bhar ke aage haath phailaane kahan jaate
(Na milta GHam to barbaadi ke afsaane kahan jaate...")
Ulfat ke nae diwaanon ko kis tarah se koi samjhaae
Nazron pe lagi hai paabandi, deedar ki baaten karte hain
(Ai ishq ye sab duniyawaale bekaar ki baaten karte hain..."
Kabhi woh nazar jo samaai thhi dil me
Usi ek nazar ka, sahaara lie ja
(UTHaaeja unke sitam, aur jie ja...")
Le gae woh saath apne saaz bhi aawaaz bhi
Reh gaya naGHma adhura dil ke tooTe saaz me, Maalik tere sansaar me
(Mar gae hum jeeteji Maalik tere sansaar me...")
Kahin TooTjaae na hasrat bhara dil
Na yun teer phenko, nishaana badalke
("Mohabbat ki raahon me chalna sambhalke..."
>This (the Mere Mehboob title song)
>particular song perhaps has the most number of stanzas as well !
>I don't remember all of them at this moment, but I will try to recollect
>them. Anybody has any ready data ?
I checked the post in which Preetham had posted most of the Mere Mehboob songs.
The Lata version has 3 and the Rafi version 5 stanzas! (But, this is not the
song with max. no. of stanzas)
>: kahiN tum wohi to nahee
>
>I am quite confused, with this one. Can you supply the full line please ?

It's a very frustrating experience to get stuck thus, isn't it? :-)

Oh, I am :-) This was the very GHazal I had picked as an example in my
anti-Shanky-J post some days back.

bit of it.

Posting on to rmim after a long break. Guess the trip back home made me a bit
too lazy.
With reference to Rajendra 'Jubilee' Kumar's acting abilities, in response to
Shashi's article referring to him as a good actor and as one who never overacted
IMHO, I do feel that Rajendra Kumar was definitely a lucky guy. I would never
consider him as one with great acting abilities. His movies nevertheless have
had some excellent musical scores, and that IMHO, was the reason for his movies
doing well at the box-office. Rajendra Kumar has always been considered as one
of those guys who tried copying Dilip Kumar's acting style (albeit not with the
same amount of success). This is not just my personal view, but those expressed
by many in the film industry itself. Anyway, discussing Rajendra Kumar's acting
abilities extensively, may not be within the scope of this group. So I am
leaving it at that.
As regards songs from some Rajendra Kumar's movie, another song, though
relatively recent, was
Madhuban khushboo deta hai
Saagar saawan detaa hai
Jeenaa uskaa jeenaa hai
Jo auron ko jeewan detaa hai
from Saajan Binaa Suhaagan. I have always liked the simple yet very sweet lyrics
of this song. The tune itself is very simple and down to earth and has been
rendered excellently by Yesudas.
Another song which remains etched in my memory, is Mukesh's soulful rendering
of the song -
Husn-e-Jaanaa idhar aa
Aainaa hoon main teraa
Main sawaaroongaa tujhe
Saare gHam de de mujhe
Bheegi palkein na jhukaa
Aainaa hoon main teraa
picturised on Rajendra Kumar and Vyjayanthimala Bali.
I have a couple of questions regarding a couple of songs from Rajendra Kumar's
films. Could some kind netter please provide the answers?
1. I remember seeing a song picturised on Rajendra Kumar, wherein he is
dressed in the uniform of an NCC cadet, is riding a bicycle, and is singing
the song as he goes. The song, if I remember right, had a theme which
suggested that we, the young Indians, will be the torch-bearers for a
bright future for India, or something to this effect. Does anybody have
the details regarding this song? Of course, it is in Black and White. Sorry
if I sound a bit too foggy.
2. The song 'Kaun hai jo sapnon mein aayaa' from Jhuk Gayaa Aasmaan, has the
tune exactly the same as an Elvis Presley song. I do remember seeing this
song in one of Elvis' movies. In the line where Rafi goes 'O priyaa aaaaa
aaaaaaa.......', Elvis, if I remember right, goes 'Mariaa ..............'
or something like that. Would someone be able to provide details of this
Elvis song? Also, I was curious, was this Elvis movie released before
Jhuk Gayaa Aasmaan, for the MD to lift the tune so conveniently?
Regards

Thanks for the film name on the Jesudas song as Saajan
bin suhagin. I have all of Jesudas hindi songs and didnot
know which movie this was from.
The 2nd query of yours....though I am not sure it could be
from Sasural or from Nazraana ( a remake of Tamil superhit
Kalyaana Parisu with Gemini & Sarojadevi).
I would like to say that one of the very best songs from
hindi films for ever is from Rajendra Kumar's "Sasural"
....teri pyari pyaari soorat ko.....Rafi & SJ (?).
Baharon phool barsavo mera mehaboob aaya hai ....ranks
as another alltime best at least on my list.
Sashi.

: When it comes to the richness of Urdu Lyrics, Shakil is next only to
: the great Sahir. He didn't display as much "nazakat" as Sahir did, but
: his command over Urdu is comparable to that of Sahir.
But as far as poetic beauty goes, I rank Rajinder Krishan above Shakeel.
To support my claim I adduce this GHazal. No high-flown Urdu, no picturesque
imagery, simple, elegant and surprisingly as yet un-ITRANSed.
Film : Adaalat
Voice : Lata
Music : Madan Mohan
Lyrics : Rajinder Krishan
Unko yeh shikayat hai ke hum kuchh nahin kehte
Apni to yeh aadat hai ke hum kuchh nahin kehte
Majboor bohot karta hai yeh dil to zubaan ko
Kuchh aisi hi haalat hai ke hum kuchh nahin kehte
Kehne ko bohot kuchh tha agar kehnepe aate
Duniya ki inaayat hai ke hum kuchh nahin kehte
Kuchh kehnepe toofan uTHa leti hai duniya
Ab ispe qayamat hai ke hum kuchh nahin kehte

If I remember correctly this song is from Arzoo. There is a version were
both Latha and Rafi sing it, or atleast that's the only one I have heard

Its from Arzoo with R.Kumar and Sadhana. There is also a version of
