G'day,

I've been watching Chalti ka Naam Gaadi, and I thought I'd add this song
into the ISB, but I've been having some prob's with a few bits. Could
someone check through the lyrics for me?

Also, about the title of the movie, does it mean something like 'whatever
goes' (what does the 'chaltii' mean - is it 'moving', or is it 'sphere of
authority')?

I've seen the expression 'chalti ka naam gaaRi, gaaRi ka naam ukhaRi',
which expresses something like how the world never runs right, the world
being topsy-turvy, changing fashions, or something? So what's wrong with
calling a 'chalti' a 'gaaRi'? (Sorry for being so obtuse about this - but
there are times when idioms just get too much - what can one do when in
one's own language an owl is seen as the epitomy of wisdom :-)

It means 'that which moves'.

'gaaR' is a verb in Hindi, meaning something like 'to bury'.
'deewar mein keel gaaRna' means to take a nail and hammer it into a
wall. When you are done, the nail is 'gaaRi hui' in the wall.

So 'gaaRi' would be an object one end of which is stuck, in
the ground or something. Separately, 'gaaRi' is also a vehicle.
'chalti ka naam gaaRi' is a play on these two disparate meanings
of the word. Comes from Kabir's

..... ko ..... kahein, baney doodh se khoya
chalti ko gaaRi kahein, dekh kabeera roya

[could someone fill in the blanks?]

wherein the dude Kabir rues the inappropriate naming of things,
and indirectly the general topsy-turviness of the world (in the process
supplying the titles for two great Anoop Kumar films).

I never thought of the other meaning and took it as just another
funny title. Thanks for enlightening.

And don't tell me there is similiar hidden meaning behind "baDhati
ka naam daaDhi" too !!

Actually, in the context of the original couplet posted by Vijay Kumar,
chalti probably means dilute (milk) and gaaRi means concentrated.
