Kahan se aye badira gulta jaye kajra...
It's a very pleasing raag. Sung by Yesudas in a movie (I forget the name
of the movie; it's a comedy) *ing Farouque Sheik, Deepti Naval, Rajesh bedi ..
The scene is Deepti Naval singing this song with her guru, after she breaks
up with FS.
Thanks in advance.

Lyrics of "Kahaan se Aaye Badra"
Movie : Chashme Baddoor
Singers: Yesudas and Haimanti Sukla
Music : Rajkamal
Lyric: Indu Jain
Rag: Megh
This is in the category of 'sad songs' for me, with the Deepti Naval
character in the movie emoting a lot of situational angst in it - having
just 'broken up' with the Farooq Shaikh character.
This is the first set of lyrics I am posting, and I hope I am
conforming to the stylistic consensus.
(BTW, is someone collecting all the complete lyrics posted here so
far ?)

Kahaan se aaye badraa
Dhulta jaaye kajraa,
Kahaan se aaye badraa,
Dhulta jaaye kajraa.
Palkon ke satrange deepak,
Ban baithe Aasoon ki jhalar,
Moti ka anmolak heera
Mitti me ja phislaa
Kahaan...
Neend piyaa ke sang sidhari,
Sapnon ki sookhi phulwari,
Amrit ho to Takraate hi,
Jaise vish mein baglaa,
Kahaan...
Utare megh yaa phir chaaye
Nirdaya Jhonke agna baDhaye,
Barse hain ab tose saawan,
Roye, man hai paglaa,
Kahaan...

Yes ! Does anyone know how Haimanti Sukla's career progressed thereafter ?
(I think this was her first major song.) The movie itself became something
of a cult classic at Delhi University, where it was shot almost entirely.
Does any one remember the name of the (woman) who directed the movie ?

My speculation is that the *movie* director went for a touch of realism.
After all, the Deepti Naval character in the movie was not supposed to
sing too well. My guess is that some other singers were also auditioned
for the song, perhaps those that you mention. I remember reading RD Burman
say that the early eighties were a time when various music directors were
giving 'a chance' to singers other than Lata and Asha, but the other singers
did not measure up. Perhaps this song provided the contrast between the
'other singers' and Lata, Asha, Suman etc. Whether Suman Kalyanpur can be
placed in the same league as the other two is a question I have no
opinion on, but would like to hear some.

Was'nt it Sai Paranjpai. Check out her other movie - KATHA (* F.
Shaik and Nasr. Shah). I enjoyed it as much as Chashme Baddoor. Remade
in Malayalam (* Mohan Lal and Sreenivas).

This reminds me of Madan Mohan's "maairi...". I have forgotten just about
everything about the song except that Madan Mohan sings the initial
part, and Lata sings the other. Now maybe comparisons like this shouldn't
be made, but you can't help noticing that Madan Mohan totally pales when
Lata starts her stuff. It's my opinion that Madan Mohan has done an absolutely
lousy job of the singing. And I can't really come to terms with the fact that
he still chose himself to sing it.
So here's the question: Does the film actually have a character who is
supposed to be a lousy singer? What is the context of this song?
And what's the film, anyways?

Gimme a break man .. this song IS really well sung. The initial alaap,
albeit short, is extremely pretty.
On a side note, Asha in my opinion
does not belong in Lata's league anyway. The fact that someone lasted in
the singing business may not have everything to do with the singer's
talent or voice. There are lots of examples that come to mind
1) Geeta Dutt...
2) Vani Jayaram
3) Yesudas
4) Suman Kalyanpur.
etc.
On the other hand Shabbir Kumar (like Asha) has lasted decades.
Need I say more.
:-)
I wonder how many people agree with this assessment of Asha's
talents. IMHO, both are equally great. Both have their specialities.
Asha is far more versatile that Lata. Who could sing 'Jhumka gira re..',
'Paan khaye saiyan hamaro...', 'nazar laagi raja tore bangale par..',
to name just a few of her great songs.
I really would like to know how many people think Asha is not
in Lata's league because I vehemently disagree!!
